I am inspired daily by the beauty of our universe, the complexity of life on our small planet and the exciting discoveries our species is making in the fields of paleontology, archeology, cosmology and particle physics to name a few.
From the mind blowing concepts of space, time and the universe, to the attempt to understand the Higgs Field, quantum physics and the origins of life on earth. There is no shortage of new things to discover.
This is what understanding a little about these things means to me…
Understanding that I am related to every other living thing on earth has given me respect for each living thing. It has strengthened my abhorrence for animal cruelty & made me realize that we are not masters over the animal kingdom but part of it and need to behave as such.
Understanding how the earth was formed and concepts like plate tectonics, has made me realize that natural disasters are just that – natural disasters due to physical forces beyond our control. No blame, no guilt needed, no divine explanations, just more work needed to predict as well as we can, and more planning to deal with these catastrophes when they do occur.
Understanding that this is the life we have, the odds of me being here as I am are so remote, and yet here I am! I need to take full advantage of being alive in the here and now! As one brilliant bumper sticker reads “I believe in Life Before Death!” Life is precious and fleeting, it should be cherished!
Understanding that the things that are alive today, are part of an evolutionary chain that started billions of years ago, and will continue to evolve for millions more. This gives us a greater responsibility to look after our environment. If we don’t, Humans will not survive, the evolution of intelligent beings will have to start again. Imagine what we could evolve into if technology & intelligence are propagated and allowed to flourish. This cannot happen if we don’t nurture our environment!
The hope & joy that this understanding brings me is overwhelming, and it is ‘The gift that keeps on giving’ as there is so much more to learn about.
I’m sure you’ve worked it out already, the enemies of reason and understanding look forward to the destruction of earth, the apocalypse, and the end times.
I on the other hand do not!
