The curse of street drugs

27 July 2014, 14:42

Words have no meaning in this illness. It is devastating beyond. This past week I have had the task of dealing with TIK or crystal meth drug addicts. I somehow believe most of us have no idea what is going on in the streets when it comes to drugs and the social ills this brings.

I have dealt with addicts before but nothing like this current situation unfolding. The fairly new drug on South African streets TIK or crystal meth and heroin are now freely available.

It turns you into a very ill person in body mind and spirit. It robs you of everything including your mind your dignity and your being. It turns you into a slave of addiction with the primary function of getting the next fix. Each and every waking moment is spent searching for ways and means to get hold of the drug.Including stealing from everyone and anyone on your path as the cravings are so bad.

I have witnessed people going from docile characters into being filled with hatred at themselves and others in seconds. The look in their eyes are sad.sad. Eventually after some time many of these people make it onto the streets and they become the streets or dark alley ways they congregate in.

They sleep wherever they can find a space if they have been fortunate enough to get a strong enough fix to actually fall asleep.

These are our people. These are normal everyday folk not from another planet. They mostly come from middle class to even wealthier backgrounds. They once held jobs had families mothers sisters daughters brothers fathers and uncles turned into people we no longer recognize.

The mainly Nigerian drug lords drive by in flashy cars wearing fancy gold chains and expensive watches. They are mostly dressed to the nines and come across as friendly people normal businessmen doing the rounds.Behind the facade though are ruthless business people and criminals who show no fear for authorities and openly deal in the street as if they could be selling insurance policies. They all work in a tried and tested manner by word of mouth from the addicts at first they are very friendly toward a new customer often adding a little bonus into the transaction.A few weeks later you are employed by them not of your own free will but in order to prevent the pending detox and overcome the massive cravings you will give your soul to them just for the next fix.Innocent woman and girls become part of the structure of prostitution and pushers.Men become couriers. Its very much like a business any business.Profit and loss.Profit for as long as they have someone hooked loss if the customer ends up in jail or the morgue.

I am now running a campaign to open up a shelter and rehabilitation facility next to the homeless shelter we run.We need massive assistance in this please.

Kindly spread the word and care and share you don't want to land in a situation like this believe me.
