This piece is prompted by the latest silliness about some occultic vs some deliverance church murders. See
for the details of the silliness.
Below is the relevant piece out of the bible, followed by the obvious observation that there was no satan in the Garden of Eden. It is all manmade myth, and it is almost unbelievable that so many people fell for and still do for the nonsense.
“3 Now the SERPENT was more crafty THAN ANY OF THE WILD ANIMALS the Lord God HAD MADE. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”
Now to verse 13 and the curse:
“The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”
14 So the Lord God said to the SERPENT, “Because you have done this,
“Cursed are you above ALL LIVESTOCK
and ALL WILD ANIMALS!
You will CRAWL on YOUR BELLY
and you will EAT DUST
all the days of your life.
15 And I will put ENMITY
BETWEEN YOU AND THE WOMAN,
and between YOUR OFFSPRING[a]AND HERS;
he will CRUSH[b] your HEAD,
and you will STRIKE his HEEL.”
16 To the woman he said,
“I will make your pains in childbearing very severe;
with painful labor you will give birth to children.
Your desire will be for your husband,
and he will rule over you.”
Verse 3: “Now the SERPENT WAS MORE CRAFTY THAN ANY OF THE WILD ANIMALS the Lord God HAD MADE.”
No comment needed to emphasize the obvious that the serpent belonged to the class “WILD ANIMALS” god had just finished creating. (See Gen 2 18-24 for THAT strange account in which god actually got it wrong by thinking he could find a sex partner for Eve by first creating the wild animals and looking for her among them.)
We should take cognisance of the strange and quite unintended consequences of the reported curse god placed on what many would like us to believe was satan. The curse complete missed its target, if the one assumes the target was indeed satan.
Satan does not crawl around on his/her/its belly, nor does satan eat (consume) dust/soil, or produce offspring. We know that serpents simply use their poisonous fangs (some species are not even poisonous and are regarded by their owners as quite agreeable pets) to defend themselves, and they will by the nature of their anatomy and that of humans probably more often only manage to strike us on the heel. But not because of some god ordained curse. How much clearer must one be to convey the obvious?
Nowhere any mention of satan in the narrative. If it was satan, god (or the author(s) of Gen 3) would have said so in clear language. Such an important event in the history of mankind and the reason for our sinful condition that a redeemer (Jesus) is required, but the identity of the culprit (the “ENEMY” as some believers like to refer to the culprit) which causes it and allegedly puts all god’s good intentions to the sword is kept in the background – with a wild animal taking the rap – and of course bearing the curse! What a fib! Later imaginations and dishonesty introduced satan into the myth. If it was really satan in the event god would have said so. Instead the serpent gets blamed and cursed. Satan was NOT punished. One of the WILD ANIMALS referred to as THE SERPENT WAS.
Is it fact that satan is regarded as our accuser before god and as such has access to god? See Job. Now, why would god want to believe a word satan has to say about any of us? I always thought satan was a real rascal and liar.
But the most astonishing is that the “dragon” and his angels are still in heaven. See Revelation. Only in the end times will the good angels under the command of Gabriel fight the angels of the “dragon” and throw them out of heaven. Will have to be some form of sumo wrestling in which the heavies take up a crouching position opposite each other and push until one falls off the cloud onto earth. Always the same victor every time? Surely some of the good guys will lose and also fall off that cloud! You can’t win all of them. Can’t really think how angelic beings will be able to fight each other any other way. Swords? Medics at hand? Recovery time for wounds to heal?
It should be observed that the curses and punishments attributed to god’s cursing in the Gen 3 account of the events in the Garden of Eden seem quite final. No threat of eternal punishment. What changed afterwards that the bible contains more serious punishments? Let’s keep it simple and obvious: New religious sects and madness developed and gained ascendency, and with it the intensity of their hatred of all and sundry who did not and still do not agree with their views.
All one has to do to grasp the truth about the bible (its unreliability) is to read it – with an open mind, and of course with the caveat that explanations like so-called context and other little diversions like interpretation and translations the believers fall back on, increase in number in exactly the proportion the cracks in the bible multiply.
Why must everything in the bible always require complicated explanations? Actually excuses and rationalizations. And the proffered solutions and explanations by believers can be quite diverse and bewildering.
Those who have not yet read the article “Are Roman Catholics Christians” (appeared on this forum on 15/1012) will be amazed to discover just how deep the hatred between Protestants and Catholics can run. Just another clear example of how different the appreciation of the same source material and religious figures in the bible can be.
Let’s keep it basic and simple. No little fancy arguments and evasions by the faithful.
