For the handful of us who aren't riled into voting frenzy by calling Premier Zille 'Madame' and calling Zuma 'Showerhead'... what do you think should be the most important election issue this time round?
I would have three, although the third doesn't have to be the most important but still quite important.
The most important issues for me are Electoral Reform and Corruption, in that order.
By Electoral Reform I mean a change in the way we elect our Parliamentarians and Leaders which would, yes, require a constitutional amendment (yipee). If all went as I want I wouldn't care who got into power (even if it were Mr. Malema and co.) so long as they switch us from Proportional Representation to Constituent Representation.
Proportional Representation is a system whereby we vote for political parties, not individuals. The political parties win a particular percentage of votes and are given a number of seats to fill. Then, a handful of folks in the DA or ANC or Agang or whatever floats your boat go ahead and decide who's going to be running the country. There is no MP for your town, for example, on a national level. You cannot walk into Parliament and ask to see your representative - they are 'all' your representatives, and if communism taught us anything it's that all actually means nothing. This produces leaders and legislators who are loyal to their party and party politics and not individuals first.
I propose we switch to a system like the USA or Kenya whereby we have constituents or districts which elect individuals to go to Parliament. These individuals are accountable to us and if we don't like them we can take them back and put in someone else instead. These individuals should be loyal to their constituents first, let alone their country and definitely not their party.
The second issue is corruption, but I figure that if we use a constituent system to bring government closer to the people, corruption should be less of an issue because we can kick out corrupt people easily (although it could backfire big time because it would be easier for a wealth businessman in one area to swing votes for his candidate, but that's part of the politics).
Finally, Education. I don't think it should be THE election issue though not because it's unimportant but because it only reaches so far. An honest, efficient and accountable government will bring better education and health and such with it.
What do you think should be the election issue for this cycle?
