The state of the community:
There is a very powerful statement that lies in English idiom or proverbs and it goes “for a man with a hammer every problem becomes a nail", I never weighed on the strength of this statement until I was walking around the township and there were two seemingly drugged teenagers insulting a grown woman on the side of the road. As I approached the scene they left and there was another older woman not too far from where I was, what she said did make me think hard of the world this because she voluntarily decided to tell me the world has come to an end, kids have no respect, I guess that was her basis then for alluding to the ending of the world.
I would have shared her sentiment had I not thought to myself. I wish to still be alive in 30 years time from today, now my dilemma was how am I to believe the world is ending when I still have hope for the future of mine and my future kids.
What I do not understand at best is, do the people who earnestly believe the world is ending and are still shouting the message whenever a woman is raped or another murder happens in the their neighbourhood ignorant of the fact that they are still walking at that time? I too may not have understood the motivation behind the church leaders (though not all) message, but if you are alive and hoping to be for some time.
Why would you defeat the purpose of your hope? I may not have answers to many of my questions but maybe in due time someone would help.
Throughout the time that I heard this end of the world tune, it did dawn on my eyes that most people who really believe or hope they believe it, are mostly adults and that for me brought a realization of a generation that would not wish to blame themselves for failing the current youthful generation. I may not say in totality the youth are not to blame, but without direction and purpose we cannot blame the current generation for insulting adults after they have gone on their nyaope trip, or for attacking their peers violently at watering holes.
My question being was the message of studying broadcast hard enough to these kids while they were growing up? Just as the Armageddon prophecy receives this much airtime? Seemingly no! Because most of them just decide to quit school whenever they feel they are tired waking up early.
The phenomenon of absent fathers has in recent times been in the spotlight and for good reason too, I may not write here to give solutions or provide answers but soon we would need to have answers, of why the older generations seem to have lost hope of the world becoming a better? These because their lack of enthusiasm is seemingly rubbing off the current generation, who have gone on to fulfil their end of the world prophecy living large showing off their non existent wealth by burning it.
While you as an adult stands dejected blaming the problems of the world on the devil. It seems the current generation would spend its time learning how to be good criminals, in corrective institutions our governments have created. Question is. What will happen in the next decade when we have over half of the adults with criminal records?
We did find a scapegoat when without jobs; it was the “foreigners” were to blame for the lack of jobs in the country, the Nigerians for our youth snorting their way into early death, yet through all this I have still to hear parents blaming themselves for failing their offspring, Absentee fathers apologizing for their despicable behavior.
With so many programs geared at family planning and coupled with the added danger of unsafe sex, not many of the new fathers and mothers would say they did not know what to do, or that the child was a mistake, nor can they say they do not know where to get free education for their child. But through all this, many never miss their day at the social services monthly extravaganza. Not forgetting their constant murmurs of how little the money is.
If the end of the world message is constantly broadcast then it might do so voluntarily, wherefore I wonder what will happen to our walking corpses. Would they cease?
That I do not think so, which makes me believe we are going to have parents shunning their responsibility in giving direction to their offspring, without direction many would do time in correctional facilities, where it may have become a fashionable place for men to come of age.
We would have managed to replace cultural circumcision with military training. Then finish it off with corrections. The “we” in my statement would be alluding to the generation that would have managed by their hard work or hard work of those that precede them to make something of themselves, I am not saying there is a debt to be paid but in light of the chaos that may soon befall ‘us.’
It would not be (in my view) so much to ask to avoid what the owners would call a revolution, we may sit well believing we are shadowed by the law or the walls around the houses but are going to wait until they fail us to know the extent of the protection?
