The internet mask has two faces

13 January 2014, 14:39
There is currently an article on myNews24 about wearing online masks. The writer was trying to imply that one of her ex-friends was not what she purported to be online. I won't go into all the gory details because you can read them for yourself in that story.

So this got me thinking, who isn't guilty of wearing an online mask? Once you open a Facebook or Twitter account you are essentially crafting an image of yourself for others to see. And being human, who doesn't want to look their best in front of friends, family and even strangers?

I challenge anyone to say that they do not post flattering pictures of themselves on their profiles. Looking at an online profile should be like reading an advertisement for a product. You don't see adverts listing the inferior qualities but rather they concentrate on the appealing ones.

I have no problem with this because I realize that no-one's life can possibly be as rosy and perfect as they portray online. However, the author of the above-mentioned article seems to be oblivious to this simple truth.

Do some people overstep the mark? Absolutely. We all know someone who embellishes the truth and appears to be living an amazing life. But ultimately that is their issue to deal with and not your obligation to out them. The advantage of being online is that it is rather easy to de-friend someone and ignore them - which is exactly what the author of the original story should've done.
