The Kindness of a stranger!
While growing up my parents decided that it would be nice to take us four children away to a holiday resort. This one Easter brake my dad could not get off from work at his company, and our trip had already been planed, so my mom decided that she would go anyway. and he would come over the weekends.
We were so excited as this was our firs time that we would use my dads new caravan, the week before we packed the thing full off supplies and a week later of we were to masiena to the Tsipese resort , We had a nice time driving from Johannesburg, up to the the northern Transvaal , but it seemed to take the whole day to get there , conversation was good and my mom did get a but annoyed with us kinds being stuck in the kombie, you can think how a 4 year old boy a six year old girl and a 11 and 12 year old boys would get bored. I think my mom had nerves of steel.
Anyway as the sun went down the kilo board read masina 180 km and we were confidant that we would make it in time to have a braai and put up a tent
This is when the unthinkable happened, the caravan started to wane left and right and pulling the combie out of control, My mom got it back under control and then pulled over to the side of the road to see what happened , She got out and took my elder brother with her, by now it was dusk and we were next to the road she took a flash light and had a look around, boy oh boy she discovered we have a flat .Ok she asked my big brother , if he had any idée were the caravan spear weal is? Nope my brother told her , and then the big search started , she basically went true the hole caravan and even under it only to discover we don’t hace a spear, wile looking , we heard music some type of kwiato or something near by that we didn’t understand ,it was a taxi that had just pulled into a building about 50 meters from us, the occupants got out , yelled at each other drinking blacklabel corts, 5 minutes later another taxi got there and the same thing happened, all the men went into this building and you could here it sounded like a hell of a party.. The road was quiet and we were getting worried , we were now stuck.
Out of the blue from behind us we saw bright lights stopping, my mom panicked now cause se didn’t know what to expect, she told us to keep quite, walking around, the caravan we saw a figure walking towards us in the front, the figure turned out to be a man that looked like a farmer, you know safari pak blue polyester with blue long socks with a comb in the socks
He knocked at the window hello mam, do you know were you are, Oh hello we are stuck , what a place to get stuck the man replied , do you see that white building 50meters away, yes my mom replied, it is a house of prostitution for the seasonal workers on the farms in the aria Now I am so happy you came, I was going to go in there to ask for help, mam you should get going what is the problem, we have a flat weal on the caravan and don’t have a spear. Mam I have the same caravan only little bit smaller I am sure I can help you , I will be back now.
And with that the man in the safari pak got back into his bakkie and drove past us, an hour went by and he reappeared with a spear wheel , let me fit it for you , he fitted it and found out the size was different and the offered to tow our caravan to the camp site as the drive would be strange cause of the differences in the tiers sizes ,we agreed and thanked the man, he towed our van to the camp site 160 km further, and then helped us to get settled, when we stopped he introduced himself as Cobus . Cobus was a manager at a citrus farm in the aria , he was married and had 4 children of his own ,my mother thanked him and he sed he would be back the next day to collect his tire he took our flat with and sed he would help us with a new one, and asked if my mother wanted to buy a spear just incase for the trip back, she told him please and thank you , the next morning Cobus arrived about 10 o clock with the fixed wheel and the new spear and brought his kids and wife, to come and say hello, they wanted to see if we were settled and my mom gave him the money for the tires and offered to pay him for his help and petrol for towing us ,but he refused to take money for anything
A week later my Dad arrived by this time my mom called him and told him of how well Cobus has taken care of us and the story of what happened, As soon as my dad got a week end of he drove up to come say tank you to the man.
The two families eventfully became friends with each other and the friendship lasted a life time , and till this day I think of the kindness that that man did to us when he helped us, today thing like this is less likely to happen ,due to the fact that we have cell phones and help is just a call away, I think this is something that we took for granted , way back then but it a quality in human nature that is to be admired , so if something along the lines like this happens to you Praise the person who took the time to be a decent human being.this happened so long ago but yet i can never forget
