Doesn’t e-toll sound allot like the old mafia movies we all loved to watch? Picture this scenario. The overseas companies are like the Don’s; they sit back and collect the money. Then we have the henchman (SANRAL) going around and offering protection to the community at a FAIR price. (Protection from them) Then we have the prosecuting authorities, they are somewhat like the baseball bat wielding thugs making sure everybody pays or get their knee caps broken. (Face prosecution leading to fines or even jail time) Then we get the government that allow all this to happen, they are the cops with their hands in the Mob wallets, they have been bought. So the Don is sitting smoking his fat cigar and collecting money. Then we have the henchman going around and selling the protection we would not need in the first place from the people breaking our kneecaps, and the cops are turning a blind eye as they get money to allow this.
Correct me if I am wrong. The government has a national budget to repair roads and infrastructure? They collect money from our tax (PAYE, SITE, VAT, FUEL levy and so forth) the annual budget makes provision for infrastructure development. Is roads part of our infrastructure? They went about this very clever, telling everybody this was part of the soccer world cup preparations that our proud country hosted. The Gautrain and all the other fancy and expensive modes of transport normal people can’t afford were sold to us and we accepted this. We would never have imagined that our government would get into bed with such corrupt businesses in the first place. Not our government never. We have a reliable government. LOL
Trevor Noah said it best I think “paying the bully to take your lunch money” or something to that effect. We are paying for the system that is making us pay because we have no control of the money we already paid in taxes. This system will flow over to other provinces and they will also have to sit with what we are dealing with because we could not stop it. If the government is so worried about job creation they could have built manned toll booths, but then computers never take leave, they don’t strike for more money and don’t get sick. This is a joke and we fell for it hook, line and sinker. This seems like a money making racket and isn’t racketeering illegal?
This debate will probably carry on well into the future but let’s not waste anymore time go and buy your e-tags. Not now, not ever, never.
