"And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters..."-Revelation 17:1. The great whore or harlot mentioned here is the same as the first beast of Revelation 13 in whom it is said it rose "up out of the sea." And the sea or waters in Bible prophecy represent a multitude of people, that is, a populated area: "And he saith unto me, The waters which thou sawest, where the whore sitteth, are peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues."- verse 15. So this harlot woman, arise from the waters, from a populated area, an area where multitudes are but remember this is the same with the first beast, the Roman Church, that is, this very harlot is another description of Roman Catholicism.
It is of great importance to note that a woman, when speaking in prophetic language represent a church, it symbolize a church: " I have likened the daughter of Zion to a comely and delicate woman." " For thy Maker is thine husband; the LORD of hosts is his name; and thy Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; The God of the whole earth shall he be called....For the LORD hath called thee as a woman forsaken and grieved in spirit, and a wife of youth, when thou wast refused, saith thy God." Jeremiah 6:2, Isaiah 54:5,6. Thus God would liken himself as a husband and his church at the time, Israel, as a wife or woman. For Israel as church of God, symbolized by a woman she was supposed to be faithful to God as a husband should be. Many a verse you can find in Scripture regarding a church, or people of God being symbolizes or likened as a woman. Same with this woman or church of Revelation 17, but this one is a harlot church, a harlot woman. Forsaken the ways of the Lord.
The Roman Church as I have said is this harlot woman or church, because her identity is same with that of the first beast, not only is the same with were she arose but also that this very harlot woman or church was "drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus" Rev. 17:6, meaning she was the one who persecuted the saints, just with the description of the the acts of the First beast persecuted the saints, see Rev. 13,7, and both speak blasphemy. The Bible in this particular chapter gives additional details or characteristics of this antichrist power just like it does as this Roman Catholicism is described as the little horn of Daniel 7. And just like when the four kingdoms of Dan 2 are mentioned as beast in Dan. 7, given additional information to get the full picture.
But on this article we to learn of this Roman power, the Roman Church system, as why the Bible is calling it a whore. Can a church really fornicate or commit adultery? Not as literally regarding a situation between a wife with another man but spiritually so. That is, spiritual adultery: "Then said the LORD unto me, Go yet, love a woman beloved of her friend, yet an adulteress, according to the love of the LORD toward the children of Israel, who look to other gods, and love flagons of wine."-Hosea 3:1. The church of Rome, Roman Catholicism, described as a harlot woman, forsake God, the true God, and went after other gods, this they do also by adopting the customs of paganism, this antichrist power it's deadly. Thats one of the Characteristics of this Antichrist. Paul speaking of this power to come said, " For the mystery of iniquity doth already work: only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way."- 2 Thessalonians 2:7. This very "mystery of iniquity" Paul is referring developed to the papacy at a later stage. At Paul's day it was already at work, that is, false teachings infiltrating in the Church. But when later Roman Catholicism came to being the mystery came to it's full stage. Paganism mixing with Christianity, the Mystery of Iniquity, lawlessness at it's best. It was this antichrist power which adopted pagan doctrines and presented them as Christian. Yes surely God has people in this system, but the system itself is not of God.
One of the things or traditions adopted was the idea of Sunday sacredness. God as we have seen on the last article set apart a day for holy use, the Sabbath, the Seventh day of the week-Saturday- but this antichrist power decided to put God's holy day aside and choose the day of the sun, a pagan day: "Of course I quite well know that Sunday did come into use in early Christian history as a religious day, as we learn from the Christian Fathers and other sources. But what a pity that it comes branded with the mark of paganism, and christened with the name of the sun god, then adopted and sanctified by the Papal apostasy, and bequeathed as a sacred legacy to Protestantism."-Dr. E.T. Hiscox, a report of his sermon at the Baptist Minister’s Convention, New York Examiner, November 16, 1893.
Hutton Webster, Rest Days, pp. 122-123, 270. -"What began, however, as a pagan ordinance, ended as a Christian regulation; and a long series of imperial decrees, during the fourth, fifth, and sixth, centuries, enjoined with increasing stringency abstinence from labor on Sunday."
"The retention [today] of the old pagan name, ‘Dies Solis’ [Day of the Sun] or ‘Sunday’ for the weekly Christian festival, is in great measure owing to the union of pagan and Christian sentiment, with which the first day of the week was recommended by Constantine to his subjects, pagan and Christian alike, as the ‘venerable day of the sun’ . . It was his mode of harmonizing the discordant religions of the empire under one common institution."-Dean Stanley, Lectures on the Eastern Church, Lecture 6, p. 184.
One may argue that Saturday is also dedicated to another god so why would we keep it? Well the fact of the matter is, the seventh day has always been the Sabbath and still is, only this name came later when the days were named after pagan gods. Not only was Sunday adopted by this harlot woman or church, Roman Catholicism, but also many other things which are not biblical for they take traditions of men rather than God's revealed word: "Though these two divine streams are in themselves, on account of their divine origin, of equal sacredness, and are both full of revealed truths, still, of the two, tradition is to us more clear and safe.”—Joseph F. Di Bruno, Catholic Belief, 1884 ed., p. 45.
"It is not necessary to go into the subject which the diligence of Protestant writers has made familiar to most of us: the use of temples dedicated to particular saints,..holy water; asylum [monasteries]; holydays and seasons, use of saints' calendars, processions,..are all of pagan origin, and sanctified by their adoption into the church."- John Henry Newman, An Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine, p. 373 . You see why the Bible say this power is a whore, adopting things that are pagan and presented as Christian? These are man's traditions, not God. In the book,"History of Dogma" by Adolph Harnack, Vol. 4, pp. 318-319 (1898) we find the following: " Pictures of Christ, Mary, and the saints, had been already worshipped from the fifth century with greetings, kisses, prostration, a renewal of ancient pagan practices. In the naive and confident conviction that Christians no longer ran any risk of idolatry, the Church not only tolerated, but promoted, the entrance of paganism . . A brisk trade was carried on in the seventh and beginning of the eighth century in images, especially by monks; churches and chapels were crowded with pictures and relics; the practice of heathen times was revived." And what is the second commandment?-"Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them..."- Exodus 20:4,5. Have you seen what a pope would do in front of a statue of "Mary"? And also the Bible is clear that "For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus."- 1 Timothy 2:5. Only One, Mary is never a mediator or anything we should adore.
"And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH
."- Rev. 17:5 Thus we see that this woman, the Roman Church, is called Babylon. And not only is she alone, but has daughters (churches) also harlots, making this great religious kingdom called Babylon the great. Which indicate that there is a link between Roman Catholicism and her daughters, churches. But what is the link(s) connecting the churches with Rome? Is it because of certain teachings which are the same with Roman Catholicism? Why would the Bible call Roman Catholicism Babylon the Mother? Keep calm, and stay tuned!
