The perpetuation of victimhood in SA

20 September 2012, 08:41

It becomes a sad day when a nation learns the art of being victims; it becomes a day of moaning when we realize that for the past decade and a half our minds and thoughts have been conditioned to believe that we are victims in a big bad world that was created by the previous regime.

What I am trying to articulate and bring to the fore in this letter is the recent encouragement of playing victims that is on the rise in our country; in any given society whenever a tragic event occurs one will find what we term victims or beings that were affected by the event. The rest of the beings that have not been affected by the event will extend a hand of humility and help rebuild the lives of those affected, once that act has helped the affected get back on their feet, they (the affected) ultimately move from acting as victims to being survivors.

In our very unique society we find that this is not the case, if one was previously disadvantaged he/she will remain in that state till they become a virtual pauper, this perpetuates the beggar mentality which stipulates that one has to depend on alms and not actually strive to sustain oneself and succeed as a human being as there are societal structures that are set up and founded on victimhood, not only are there structures within the society but the government is funding such structures.

This entrenches the ideology of a “welfare state” where the majority of the nation waits up on the state to fund their lives from a heavily taxed working class who find themselves between a rock and a hard place as they are being taxed by the government for trying to survive and make ends meet and are being given bread crumbs by their employers who enjoy tax exemption from every structure that is of note. In essence the back breaking work of keeping the country afloat is put on the thin shoulders of the working class while those in power perpetuate the grand scheme of victimhood.

I believe it’s time we rise from such thought as a nation and start striving together for survival hood and once we have conquered that hill we will ready ourselves for being a nation of victors. And it can only be normal Joe taxpayers that can come together and help revolutionalize (excuse the cliché) the thought processes of the nation.
