The problem with Afrikaner violence

28 February 2013, 10:00
I am somehow pleased with Minister Lulu Xingwana's apology, but in truth, I'm not entirely convinced that an apology was necessary. I grew up on a farm in quite a big family.  Four brothers and two sisters.  Also with uncles and aunties around most weekends.

I can attest first hand at how us 'boeties' used to get a good few hidings when we misbehaved.  Sometimes I can say they were justified, but not always. My father and our uncles enjoyed a good dop on Saturday, especially when watching rugby or at a braai. But after too many brandy and cokes, sometimes things were getting out of hands and there was also sometimes some punching.

So again, first hand I can say that there was a level of violence in our homes, which was normal for us growing up, but what I cannot agree with with Minister Xingwana, is that it was anything religious or was anything of ownership over wives and children.

That part of her message is offensive to be honest.

Firstly, to say all Afrikaners are Calvinist is very untrue.  That is more of a English church and even the word is English.  We have our own brands of churches like NG, Pinkster and even Dutchman Reformed.  And we can't forget AGS which is like an Afrikaans Rhema or Hillsongs. Also, doing my research last night, i can see that religion is not really to blame for much violence in history.

I read of Pol Pot and Joseph Stalin, sworn atheists who are responsible for many more millions of violent deaths so it's not religion but more atheism and I don't know any Afrikaans atheists because we are religious by nature.

I hope the Minister and other Ministers in high government would better control their opinions into the future to be able to avoid the issues and blacklash we're seeing today.

Let us continue to nation build and forgive when offended.  I forgive the Minister for what she is saying about Afrikaans.
