The rabbit hole

18 March 2013, 21:00

Have a look into the rabbit hole and you will see that there are some very serious problems in the government run enterprises and there is a very real possibility that such entities such as 5fm, SABC 3 and many other government channels are heading towards privatisation in the future.

It seems that even if all the political agreements are reached the damaged caused will create a situation where either privatisation occurs or channels will be lost all together.

What is the effect of this on the ICT world? Well there are two ways to look at it. One is to say there will be a loss of content and thus less need for network infrastructure and distribution channels..... the second and more credible way to see this situation is to say that privatization of these channels will increase content quality and content production due to the efficiency privatization brings to the party. With this increased quality of content will come the demand for better distribution and higher demands on not only the content itself but the infrastructure carrying it?

This all brings us to a simple and inescapable point. Increases in content quality require better equipment, better distribution channels and better expertise all of which privatisation offers. If government run channels understood this very basic principle I wouldn’t be writing this blog.
