The spectre of Omnicide in the Syrian context. by Belinda Silbert.September 8, 2013 at 7:52am
Omnicide is definied as human extinction as a result of human action. This doomsday scenario could be the result of nuclear or biological warfare; the arms race that spins out of control or induced climate change.
At this moment in time, we are in danger of a true "checkmate situation" occurring in Syria. The Syrian Leviathan is devouring its own tail. It has emerged from the depths in an unidentifiable form that is muddying the waters for the Western traditional alliances.
It is proving challenging to classify the perpetrators of atrocities as opposed to the defenders of the State. Those who would previously have been classed as terrorists may now appear to be necessary pawns on the chessboard of the Syrian Warfield. The interests of the Western Alliances may seem to be best served by intervening in the conflict, but the result of such intervention could be catastrophic.
The neo-"Imperialists" are disdained. The U.S.A is identified as this mysterious new "species." I would dare to differ and to say that America and Israel are the two forces who the world finds it easiest to categorize as "damned if you do and damned if you don't."
Russia enjoys the luxury of a more consistent policy in Syria and a more predictable pattern as regards its actions in the Middle East. It does not appear to be actively moving the pawns around the board. However, the image of Putin-led Russia as a mass of carefully co-ordinated sharks moving into the area and circling with ever-increasing closeness is a difficult one for me to erase from my conscious imaginings.
The Iranian Enigma is a wild-card in this game. My sense is that there is an undercurrent of alarm in the new Iranian leadership. They do have insight into the cataclysmic nature of being sucked into the vortex of direct conflict with the U.S.A through the Syrian conflict.
Sabre-rattling is a dangerous practice and if Israel and America were to eventually call Iran's bluff, the economic and social damage to the country could set it back many decades. Iranian diplomacy requires a pacification of the West with reassurances that the nuclear program is being wound down rapidly and the tendering of proof that there is truly no threat to either the region or the world as a result of this program.
Europe is hesitant about committing fully to its traditional Alliance with The United States of America. It is timorous and yet this reluctance could turn out to be an ill-timed gamble. If America were to put a stop to the cannibalism of the Syrian people wherein the whole is devouring its constituent parts, its position of primacy in the Pantheon of the World Powers would be strengthened considerably.
The Syrian Leviathan needs to be tamed so that the innocent can have a chance to lick their wounds in peace and begin the healing process. Both Assad's regime and the so-called Syrian rebel forces must be stopped in their tracks by whatever means are necessary in order for them to pause and evaluate the degree to which they are feeding on their own flesh.
The spectre of Omnicide is a very real one. The Syrian conflict cannot be viewed dispassionately from our ivory towers as our extinction could result. The domino effect would be inevitable.
The Russian sharks need to come to an agreement with the American "surgeons" so that neither contingent feeds on the scraps of the meat of Syria. The existence of our species depends upon this.
