Having been a frequent visitor and commentator on the News24 site the last couple of years, I have come across a phenomenon that seems to afflict our whole society, South African and world-wide.
That terrible affliction is the "two wrongs make a right" delusion that apologists and deniers labour under.
In every single political or religious article I see this happen. Some examples include:
- Someone accuse Islam of not standing up against terrorists and the Muslims will answer "but Christians are phaedophiles".
- A comment will accuse Christians of misogyny, and they will quickly point to the oppression of women and misogyny in Islam.
- Someone will criticise the old NP government for their twisted ideologies, and a dozen people will jump on the bandwagon to shout that the ANC is incompetent and corrupt.
- An article or comment will condemn the corruption and incompetence of the ANC, and comments will quickly point out the shortcomings of the old regmine.
And so forth.
How can this be tolerated? What is the matter with people these days? Do they really think that two wrongs make a right? That you assuage your guilt and evade your responsibility by pointing to the shortcomings of others? Have we really sunk so low as a species that we can take NO responsiblity at all any more? That we always have to make ourselves look or feel better by riding on someone else' s failure?
What a shame that humanity seems to have become such a stinking lot of hypocrites.
