THE WORST RUGBY TEAMS
This weekend I had the misfortune to tune into the 2 worst games of rugby this country has ever seen. That includes referees and blowers of the vuvuzelas. The one team with a forgettable name played against the Bulldogs and beat them 23 – 16 For some time I actually thought the game was hosted by E tv and part of WWW wrestling madness. What dominated this game was the unexpected violence applied by both sides. It was obvious and clear that the referee had other things on his mind. Dirty play was intentional and ran the full time of the game. High and neck tackles were the order of the game. Yet very few cases of dirty play were actually blown by the referee. The referee spent much of his time running across the field while players were playing at referee pointing certain aspects out. Should we now drop the banter we will clearly see that both teams do not belong on a rugby field and much less playing in a first division game. Further it seemed that players were purposely trying to distract the referee and some threw what appeared to be tantrums when they did not agree with the referee. Another amusing aspect was the TV commentator doing his own thing and getting it wrong. When running the opposition down it was common practice to try and hit him in the face with the head. The modus operandi was brute force from the first to the final whistle. Somehow it seemed that there was a premeditated attempts to play the man and not the game or ball. Transgressions were obvious and clearly seen from most vantage points. The “New Rugby Today” methods probably allows the referee to look the other way. Much of the time the players were shouting instructions to the referee. Much of the time the “players” in the stadium and the vuvuzela blowers were silent. And thankfully the vuvu’s were dead. When something of interest does happen then the spectators seem to roll over with a grunt and return to dream land.
Now the above was one game. The other game was the Valke and their opposition and not much difference was apparent between the two games. Just another case of violence and dirty play. The high light being one team scored a goal and goal kick in the dying minutes of the game and won by a single point. At least this action woke up the sleeping stadium. Better collect my shoe lost in the TV set.
