There is a God, and this is not just any God, but the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the great I am, Creator of all and incarnated in the Person of Jesus Christ. And I am going to attempt, in my own way, to prove that this God not only exists, but is the only true God.
We start, of course, with the Bible; God’s word.
It is perhaps the most contentious document in history, and will remain contentious until the end of time, as it convicts people of sin, pointing out what is wrong with the world and offering the remedy. But it’s a remedy people don’t like and have never liked, as we all want to do things our way and be the captain of our own ship, whether it’s feasible or not.
Starting with the history of the Bible, we can know for sure, in spite of the protestations of the many so-called experts, that it has been proven to be historically accurate by archaeologists and historians alike. And archaeology is not just-so science, it is exacting. When they date artefacts and ruins, they can tell to within a hundred years how old it is, just by pottery shards.
Starting with Ur of the Chaldees, thought for centuries to be fiction, until it was uncovered in the 1930s. This was where Abram dwelt, until God told him to move on. Canaan was discovered in the 19th Century, the Hittite Empire was discovered in 1906, Sumerian Cuneiform Tablets speak of a great exodus of the Jews, yet now even the existence of Moses is being questioned.
No other document has come under such intense scrutiny for so long, and been proven to be true every time doubt has been cast on its authenticity. And God made sure His word would survive, no matter what happened.
In 350 BC, Ptolemy the Great, following the wishes of Alexander, had all the great works of the world translated into Greek, for the library at Alexandria. This included the Torah; what we know as the Old Testament, and it’s important for a very good reason.
The Septuagint, as it was known, provided proof that no prophecies pertaining to Jesus could be post-dated. So now they say Jesus never existed: that gets rid of that problem! How ingenious! Unfortunately for the naysayers, there is far too much evidence, and the evidence too compelling to ignore.
Jesus remains the most important person in history. Secular historians and denialists changed the calendar from BC and AD to BCE and CE, but the dates remain the same. So no matter how you try to erase Jesus from history, He refuses to go. And He will be your judge in the end, whether or not you believe it.
Jesus fulfilled over three hundred of more than four hundred prophecies in his short life. The others concern His triumphal return to earth. The odds against that happening are so long as to be considered impossible. That's why it’s easier to say He never existed. If He never existed, these particular questions don’t have to be answered.
There are three eye-witness reports to the existence of Julius Caesar, one to the existence of Alexander the Great, yet no-one has ever questioned their existence. I wonder why that is. Eye-witness reports on Jesus’ life and acts abound, yet they are dismissed by so-called serious scholars?
The same people who will willingly accept, on unproven grounds, a theory which they believe explains the origin of life, and its development, will dismiss the evidence of history.
Because evolution does not make you uncomfortable: Jesus does.
The verbal and textual gymnastics in which people indulge in order to deny the veracity of the Gospels and the existence of Jesus would defy belief if it were applied to any other discipline. Whether or not atheists, agnostics and unbelievers are good and decent people is not the point. The point is that their goodness falls so far short of the mark set by God, that they might as well give in to depravity for all the good their deeds do them. There is one standard, and we cannot reach it, no matter what we do. Because we start off blemished.
Jesus was the incarnate God, and what He said made people uncomfortable then, as it does now. He said He would divide people, and He has. No-one in the history of the world as caused so much controversy, and yet He is still regarded by many as one of the greatest men of all time, even if they do not regard Him as the Son of God.
The Gospels were regarded by Professor Simon Greenleaf, the leading authority on judicial evidence at the time, as being compellingly truthful. He wrote the authoritative ‘Treatise on the Laws of Evidence’, and the less well-known ‘Testimony of the Evangelists’, in which he staged a mock cross-examination and concluded that the evidence he heard had to be true, because of the differences. It was obvious, he said that there was no hint of collusion, but all four were describing the same story from different vantage points.
Of course, he wrote his ‘Treatise on the Laws of Judicial Evidence’ in 1833, when people still believed everything they read, because they were so stupid and lacking in any real knowledge. So it has to be dismissed out of hand because, what could he possibly know?
There is a virtual library of extra-biblical evidence, which is conveniently being ignored because, hey we know better. Nothing, and I mean nothing, will convince people who refuse to see, including a personal appearance by Christ Himself.
So how does this prove the existence of the God of the Bible?
There simply is no way that forty men, writing sixty six books over a period of sixteen hundred years, could have foretold what was foretold. There is no way these men, some of them educated, others not, could have had the scientific knowledge to say, ‘He stretches out the heavens over the empty North, and hangs the world upon nothing’.
There is no way a relatively uneducated fisherman could have written the prosaic beauty of ‘The Gospel of John’, without divine inspiration.
And finally, all the authorities had to do to kill Christianity was produce the body. Instead, they persecuted believers, murdering them in their hundreds and, eventually, thousands. Jesus rose from the dead, or these people would not have been able to continue as they had, living lives of unsurpassed morals. No body, Christianity flourishes. Produce the body, Christianity dies.
Jesus is the proof of the God of the Bible. Without Him, there is nothing, as we are nothing more than flotsam in a dying universe. We have no reason for being here.
Of course, that doesn’t mean people will accept Him, or submit to Him.
We love our independence too much for that.
And that freedom comes at a price.
