#South Africa #Apartheid
BY FARINA REINPRECHT - #Apartheid Survivor
“The South African Apartheid Regime was a unique, large-scale injustice carried out against # All people of color. People of color, classified as Other or Non-White; Colored, Indian, Chinese (approx. six million people at the last 1996 Census count), Millions of “Blacks” were more adversely affected by the inequities, oppression and sub-standard amenities, public transportation, schools, hospitals etc.
Acknowledgement of human right violations promotes healing, forgiveness, reconciliation and peace.” Yet, I am an Apartheid Survivor with regrets! My Heart Aches for ALL South Africans – “Black”, Brown or White, in South Africa or Ex Pats.
The passing of Nelson Mandela and the massive graphic media coverage of the fight for freedom opened up deep wounds for all. But, how do we forget when the consequences of a brutal regime are permanent. Even when we are “free,” some of us are terrified of the police. We may get paralyzed at the sight of a police officer. We may get transported back to past experiences with police. Anxious, we may make mistakes when encountering police officers. We may appear guilty when we are innocent. We may get charged. Possibly, ending up with a record. Generally, many of us do not have the funds to hire expert lawyers. And the cycle continues! I write to educate and inspire Awakening. I make no judgments. I too live with errors, guilt, shame and remorse. We cannot change the past. But, we can be more careful in our future interactions with humanity.
“We have the #choice to #fuel the #fires of #hatred or #build #bridges of #human #collaboration. We may seek to #divide or #strive to bind. We may allow #Grace to flow, to #quench #soul’s #natural #desire to #love. Or stifle in stubbornness!” A New year resolution?”?
