In a my first year sociology class a lecture budged in to a lecture and the first thing he taught was the concept of strange in the familiar. It is an idea that things are not what they seem to be. This concept has been engraved in my mind since then and when I look at the world, I always smile because it keeps on coming back. In addition, in my recent Public Law class, there was a debate about moral cynicism which is also related to the idea that people are worst than they appear to be. Maybe it`s time we stop reading about such concept and start applying some analysis on the real world we live in now.
The application of my analysis has lead to a most famous communication tool known as Facebook. It looks like a communication tool which others will preferably plea it a social network. Unfortunately, things I not what they seem to be and you will get a sense of what I am talking about in a moment when I parade you my message to Mark Zuckerberg. It reads as follows:
Dear Mark Zuckenberg
My name is Nkosinathi Percy Mokoena, not that you don't know just reminding you because you have been gathering our personal details since 2004. Inasmuch as Facebook has developed to be one the greatest communication tool, I stagnant about some concerns that I would like you to address. Deprived of any discarded time, can you please elaborate on the following?
1. I apprehend that maintenance is vital to Facebook; perhaps please tell me why are we forced to use time line? I have never clicked on the "use time line" option but I have time line. Apparently, timeline is good in grouping our status updates but it is still not clear for me why grouping is so necessary to you. If it's not why don't we have an option to remove timeline? If you have nothing to hide, I ruminate you would have given us the alternative to remove time line. I meditate that my might grouping reasoning might be somewhat inadequate! Who are you grouping for? Are you grouping for us or there is someone else on the picture? It looks like your grouping for us but again, “Things are not what they seem to be”
2. Why are we allowed to use our Facebook log in details even on other sites? What associates you with those sites? Are those site owners incapable of making their own log in thus they hire Mark to do it for them? What’s the agreement between you and those sites? I personally think your generously giving them our log in details in exchange to billions that you accumulate. I don't think advertising can earn you so much solely. Recently, Facebook refused to release their financial records, which say a lot about you. Many Corporations have been doing a back round checks on their applicants and Facebook proved to be useful in providing details. These are not allegations or rumors!
I am actual concerned about my privacy. Sometimes we are given options to agree with terms and conditions but we do not get an opportunity to see those terms! Is Facebook a database or a social network? If it is a social network, why it is important to use legitimate personal details if it is a social network? Will untruthful personal details jeopardies your plans with your clients? Personally, I think Facebook is now a database for personal details. People we need to wake up. Maybe you think am bananas, but one day you will see what’s really going here. Facebook appears to be a social network but again “Things are not what they seem to be”
This I my opinion and remain entitled to them. Don`t shoot me at least think about it! The powers is yours!
