Tina Joemat-Palin

14 November 2012, 23:13

"Polls are for strippers and cross-country skiers" –Sarah Palin

“Yes, historically the previous government concentrated commercial fishing in the Western Cape (and) created this artificial strength,” - Tina Joemat-Pettersson, on moving the Dept. of Fisheries from Cape Town to Pretoria.

We can refer to South African politics in many ways, from chaotic to ineffective, to bias and corrupt. The one thing you can’t call it, is boring or dull, which ironically is what you want in a politician.

Every job in the world has a stereotypical stigma associated with it. Lawyers are evil, accountants can’t find girlfriends, engineers are nerds, doctors have too many girlfriends, architects are closet homosexuals and politicians are dumb lawyers.

This is the way the world has always worked, and is suppose to work... in a perfect world that is...

However, enter the South African political arena and you’ll find the opposite of every stereotype imaginable! Dumb lawyers? Here?  If only that were the case...

During the previous U.S election four years ago, many Republican supporters cited Sarah Palin as the single biggest reason John Mc Caine lost the election to Barack Obama, simply because she is revered by the media and public as an absolute idiot.

Lucky for us in sunny South Africa, we have our own Palin in none other than Tina Joematt-Pettersson, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

Although her uninformed and quirky quotes are nothing new in S.A politics, her fashion sense and absolute lack of experience and qualifications in her portfolio makes her an easy subject for ridicule.

If one were to look for a poster child for the failure that is called ‘cadre deployment’, Pettersson would be it, simply because Calvin Klein and Christian Dior would be able to sponsor the poster with her accessories.... possibly with a quote at the bottom along the lines of... “You can at least look good when being stupid”...

In light of the new wave of farm worker strikes that hit the country, Pettersson was quoted as saying that the workers ‘won’, and that she took notice of their plight by asking the Department of Labour to raise the minimum wage with R 10 per day.

Thus, she concedes that she hadn’t really cared about them until now, because they didn’t strike...

All this during the same time enquiries are held in Marikana, and other industries are doing their utter best to avoid Wild Cat Strikes with the potential to bring the economy to its knees.

In my mind, she is the embodiment of the problems in our cabinet... on the one side of the coin in any way.

The other side is made up of ruthless fraudsters who exist solely to hide the fact that their hands are in the till.

I suppose given the choice between the two, one would rather choose stupidity over evil, simply because stupid people are too dumb to be evil.

For that matter, the average politician is far from a rocket scientist in any way... worldwide.

So... Pettersson and Palin then.

Two of a kind, existing in the turbulence we know as the world economy and politics these days.

They irritate people with intelligence... due to their lack thereof, and legitimise the blondes... due to their contradiction of their elite group of jokes.

Angela Merkel and Hillary Clinton must be laughing their arses off at this brunette spectacle!

For what it’s worth, Tina, every time I see a quote from you, I know that S.A politics has the ability to put a grin on my face... one that quickly turns into a chuckle!

South African politics... there’s a clown around every corner, but only one of them wears Prada...
