Maybe I may be Jurassic in my thinking, but are cell phones, or to be more specific smart phones, an invention that has become a Frankenstein monster which instead of improving the art of communication is destroying it.
Let me explain. As a lover of most of the terpsichorean arts, I went to watch “Dirty Dancing” at the weekend which was most enjoyable. The family behind also thought so.
Before the show, all 4 of them (father, mother, daughter and son) were Tweeting, Facebooking away. At the interval, out come the cell phones again and of they go again Twitter and Facebook, how good the show was and sending and receiving other inanities such as “how good is that photo of a photo of a photo”? Who gives a damn?
They were not the only communication addicts in the auditorium. There were others in the same row as my wife and I as well as scattered all over the place.
When the show was over, all of these people and others in the foyer had their cell phones sending more banal information into the ether. In fact there were more people twittering on their cell phones than those wanting to inhale nicotinous fumes.
I really only have a Facebook account to upload these epistles to News 24, and I must admit that in the main, the vast majority of uploaded articles to News 24 have something to say. I may highly disagree with these articles and likewise they may highly disagree with my submissions but it is not the chattering of monkeys as most Tweets and Facebook submissions are.
As you can guess I do not have a smart phone and even though I am in business, I have found that I do not need one. If my clients require information etc. they phone me and not send messages that I need a magnifying glass to read on my cell phone.
Am I alone in thinking this or are there others who believe that civilisation is regressing in it communication skills?
