It is 01:15 at night I cannot sleep, I will not sleep, the GREATEST man of my generation has just passed away…I feel compelled to pay tribute to him. I feel like the world doesn’t understand and I have to tell them. They must never forget what he did for me and everyone else on the planet.
I am from the middle generation. I grew up, trained to hate those different to me, but didn’t understand why. I am older than the born frees but young enough to appreciate the change in our country (it is a shame that the old are so inflexible). I feel that no generation understands the change better than mine. I have seen the change and feel I understand the amazing sacrifices Mandela made. He has shown the world that peace is NEVER impossible, that Love conquers ALL.
I never met him personally, I respected him too much to run up to him like some others, but he came to my school once and his presence was palpable. I have met many great, charismatic people in my life, but no one quite stacks up to Mandela, even at a distance. I think Bill Clinton aptly sums it up as follows "Every time Nelson Mandela walks in a room we all feel a little bigger, we all want to stand up, we all want to cheer, because we'd like to be him on our best day."
In honor of Mandela the man who freed my country and my future from hate, I will always try to be bigger and better than I am. I will try to follow his example and if my neighbor does, and his neighbor does too, we can work together to better our future. My appeal to everyone in the world is as follows:
Regardless of race religion, colour or orientation, embrace your enemy, Love him and most of all forgive him. In the memory of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela I will try to do this every day. I hope that you will too. The world WILL be a better place!!! It is the best tribute we could pay the GREAT man. The one I believe he would want.
