“We are going to emancipate ourselves from mental slavery because whilst others might free the body, none but ourselves can free the mind.” A lot of people will sing along to Robert Nesta (Bob) Marley “Redemption song” and not realize the power of the lyrics in that song. When Bob wrote the lyrics he was actually quoting from Marcus Garvey’s speech given on July 10th 1938.
The reason people don’t realize or even know that Bob Marley and Nelson Mandela were quoting from Marcus Garvey it’s because black people are investing more time on entertainment than they are on real education. We celebrate the “Freedom Day” every year and preach how we are free and yet we cannot read a book to help us emancipate from mental slavery.
True emancipation from mental slavery can only be achieved by gaining new ideas, knowledge and insights. The reason we believe there’s no party better than the ANC it’s because we are stuck on old ideas and our knowledge has not improved in the past twenty years.
Wisdom is the greatest observer, and it cannot be gained through laziness, fear, ignorance, low self-esteem and pessimism. It is very import that we learn from entertainment, but we should also realize that it is very limited and in most cases very misleading. Many people that will be voting for their chosen political party have not even read the relevant policy, and thus making an uneducated decision, based on trust and fear on what might happen if a white man leads South Africa again.
The fact that we depending on history and our forefathers to decide who we should vote for or relying on those that have their own ideas and education, shows that we are not self-reliant when it comes to knowledge and thus we will remain slaves for the coming decades. We are mental slaves although physically free. If we vote based on what our grandparents are saying or experienced, our votes are not mentally valid, and we have been slaves for more than twenty years.
I will be the first to admit that a black man has always been a symbol of failure, and that’s because we distance ourselves from reading and study to upgrade our conscious. The ANC might be in power until Jesus Christ comes back, but if we don’t change the way we think and try adopt an attitude of learning we will never be free and the ideas of Garvey, Marley and Mandela will never be realized.
