US Physics Professor- Global warming a scam

08 April 2014, 07:53

Although Hal Lewis, Professor Emeritus of Physics, tendered his resignation from his post at the University Of California four years ago, his comments in respect of global warming are timeous and deserve a revisiting  especially as this hot topic is continually at the forefront of global  attention.

Commentator Anthony Watts describes it (the letter of resignation) as follows; this is an important moment in science history. I would describe it as a letter on the scale of Martin Luther, nailing his 95 theses to the Wittenburg church door. It is worthy of repeating this letter in entirety on every blog that discusses science.

Another, Richard Brearley says; it’s so utterly damning that I’m going to run it without further comment.

Hal Lewis begins by saying, that when he joined the American Physical Society sixty seven years ago

it was much smaller, much gentler, and not yet corrupted by the money flood, a threat against which Dwight Eisenhower warned a half- century ago.   In earlier times he states that the choice of physics as a profession guaranteed a life of poverty and abstinence- and that world War Two changed all that.  He goes onto mention that when he chaired the first APS study of a contentious social/scientific issue, The Reactor Safety Study, about 35 years ago although zealots existed

there was not any inordinate pressure on physicists. He goes on to add that the situation is completely different now, the giants no longer walk the earth, and the money flood has become the

justification for existence of much physics research and provides support for untold numbers of professional jobs.

He continues, it is the global warming scam, with the (literally) trillions of dollars driving it, that has corrupted so many scientists, and has carried APS before it like a rogue wave. It is the greatest and

and most successful pseudoscience fraud I have seen in my long life as a physicist.

He goes on to mention an email concerning global warming ‘a few of us sent’ to a fraction of the membership. APS ignored the issues, but then its President immediately launched a hostile investigation as to where the email addresses were obtained. In better days discussion of important issues were encouraged, the constitution (of the APS) citing this as its principle purpose.

Lewis refers to the APS statement on climate change as appalling and claims it must have been written in a hurry by a few people over lunch. A few petitioned the Council to reconsider it. The statement referred to the poisoned word ‘ incontrovertible’ or undeniable, which could not be applied to this topic.  In response, he says, the APS appointed a secret committee that never met,

never spoke to skeptics, yet endorsed the statement in its entirety.

Refer to the link provided for more details of the letter.

Interestingly he points out that a chairman of a physics department would lose millions a year if the  global warming bubble bursts. Indeed this doesn’t only apply to academia, what of the alternate energy companies funded by taxpayers, as well as the supporting  green consultancies that continue to spring up everywhere

The issue of carbon taxes will also increase

government coffers substantially.

The maxim being- if it sounds and smells like a scam ........ it is probably a scam.

For another perspective on this topic refer to Australian physicist and geologist Murry Salby  as per the last link provided.
