Just how democratic is the Democratic Alliance?
Over years I have seen behaviour that makes me question whether they are as democratic as they claim.
Let’s start with Mamphela Ramphele becoming the DA's presidential candidate, You would think there would be some kind of internal election for the presidential candidate, but most DA members didn’t even know about it until it was announced at the press conference.
The DA didn’t just support Floor Crossing, they came up with the idea back in 2001.
The DA supported parliamentary rule changes that gave itself and the ANC more talking at the expense smaller parties.
Every time the ANC tries to pass a law without proper public consultation the DA would object, they would even go as far as the Constitutional Court to stop them.
But when Same-sex marriage laws were bulldozed through parliament without proper public consultation and the ANC the telling its MPs to vote in favour of it, not only did the DA not object, but they actually congratulated the ANC on showing leadership, one DA member even said that sometimes it’s okay ignore the people’s will. It appears to DA only cares about democracy when it suits them.
