Until the second coming

11 May 2014, 17:00

The IEC has declared the 2014 Provincial and National Elections - the ANC remains on the pound seat, nationally and in the eight provincial legislatures.

The ANC has swum against the tide to once more claim overwhelming electoral victory, just like it has been the case since 1994.

The media and commentators predicted doom and gloom for the ANC. According to these prophets of doom and gloom, the ANC would have its majority highly reduced with Gauteng and Northern Cape being lost to the opposition.

One weekly newspaper, the Mail & Guardian even called on South Africans to vote against the ANC! Then there was the madness of Malume Ronnie Kasrils and his coterie.

The EFF and AGANG were billed as the parties which would relegate the ANC to the footnotes of history. So-called service delivery protests heralded the electoral demise of the ANC.

As President of Zimbabwe Robert Mugabe would put it, prophets of doom and gloom have been doomed - the ANC remains the darling of South Africans with over 11million votes!

The people of South Africa have once more given the ANC an overwhelming mandate to continue with the work started in 1994.

The ANC remains rock solid.

Why I love Cambodia’s capital

There are so many reasons to hate Cambodia’s bite sized capital of Phnom Penh. Open sewers, naked children, piles of burning garbage on every street. Its a dirty, smelly, noisy amalgam. But Phnom Penh grows on you and by the time you leave it will occupy a special place in your heart. Read more...
