A water crisis that has hit the city of Rustenburg the last month has residents fuming. Some suburbs have been left permanently dry for weeks while some had to deal with irregular load shedding due to reservoirs running empty. This being the official response from the local municipality without any further explanation, has prompted the community to schedule a meeting with council members tonight (2 October) at Bergsig Academy to demand answers.
“I have two small kids who has to go to school unwashed” one Rustenburger was quoted saying, while others echoed the predicament, adding to it that the lack of water has seen geysers burn out and toilets remain unflushed (sic) while waiting for the municipal supplied water trucks to do their rounds and supply residents with water, sometimes just one bucket at a time.
“We pay first world rates for third world service delivery. This is unacceptable” Petrus Thlokomela from Proteapark said on Wednesday. His family has had to rely on the water truck’s supply for three weeks already, his youngest getting sick because of the water even after it was boiled. “If we don’t get answers soon, people will start resolving to desperate measures to get themselves heard.”
