Wealth Creation, Apartheid & Entitlement

Wealth Creation, Apartheid & Entitlement

One of many ugly consequences of the Apartheid system is the continued perception that the previously advantaged population is solely to blame for the poverty and lack of economic success in the previously disadvantaged community. The culture of entitlement and the Victim mentality has paralyzed the South African population.

In complete contrast, the Somali population in South Africa seem to have a different view (having not been subjected to the Apartheid system), they create opportunities & wealth for themselves by building their own businesses whilst the local population cry foul, claiming that their jobs are being taken from them and they are being victimized (again).

Wealth is not finite; it is created and destroyed by our actions. The idea that wealth should be redistributed is a fatally flawed idea. Taking wealth from one to give to another is not a successful strategy - as can be seen in many cases of land redistribution in South Africa and Zimbabwe. One example being The Cybele Forest Lodge and Health Spa outside Nelspruit in Mpumalanga (established in 1979) that was a thriving asset until it was handed over to the Manzimhlophe community. What was once a thriving business has now been lost, together with 45 jobs lost to the community, a lose/lose situation.

The wealth that is given will be destroyed and the wealth that was taken will be re-created by those who have the skills. I’m sure the previous owners of the Lodge will create wealth somewhere else. (The previous owners were paid for the asset, which some will claim is not fair, but bear in mind the value was created by them, not by anyone else. To claim it was on the backs of the Manzimhlophe community is also false, as they have proven that they could not do it for themselves – one needed the other).

The perception that the previously advantage population became wealthy by ‘hanging around’ doing nothing whilst the previously disadvantaged did all the work, is also a false perception that needs to be addressed. The previously advantaged community worked very hard to attain their wealth, bear in mind that physical labor is not the only form of work… (The Apartheid system was an atrocious system, but the perception that there was no effort made by the previously advantaged leads to the idea that the presently advantaged expect to now do nothing and receive the same rewards).

We need to take a practical approach to this problem, not an ideological, politically correct approach. Lets find out what will work.

My Child has just finished grade 6 - the amount of politically charged material in the curriculum was astonishing, so much about Apartheid, white domination, the struggle, the struggle heroes etc. What do you think the impact on race relations in the grade 6 classes has been? Do you think it is going to have a positive effect? And from what I hear, the same is being taught in every school grade. We need to stop teaching kids that they are or were victims or perpetrators and start teaching them skills so that they can become wealth creators and not welfare grant beneficiaries. I’m not saying that we should deny our history; I’m saying we should not perpetuate the damage by keeping it alive in the minds of our kids, people have suffered enough.
