Okes, I am not a youngster anymore.
But I look back at my teenage years with certain satisfaction & enjoyment. I was not your top sports performer, but enjoyed my few high school cricket & tennis matches.
After school I enjoyed a bit of bodyboarding & lots of skateboarding. Don’t get me wrong, I was no pro at skateboarding. Heck, I was proud to even do a drop-in on a halfpipe without breaking a bone. But I really enjoyed it.
In the meantime a good 20-25 years have passed, and as many guys my age, I have grown a good proportion of my sixpack through the realms of beer sixpacks, into a small barrel around the waistline. I must admit that I am a bit on the lazy side with regard to going to the gym on a regular basis.
Whilst my last visit to Europe I was sitting on the balcony of the hotel gazing at the Italian ocean, when I heard a noise approaching the hotel. I thought it must be a few kids on skateboards or rollerblades & was surprised to see that it was a group of toppies my age hacking along on their skateboards. This was motivation enough, I was LUS for the old days again.
So when I got back to SA I ordered myself an old-school Powell Peralata skateboard from a company in San Francisco, together with some swiss bearings & soft wheels for street skating. It felt like 20 years ago when the stuff arrived. I even got my neighbor to join in. He ordered himself an old-school Santa Cruz board & off we were. Just for the fun of it. My laaitie told me how uncool these old boards are, but we couldn’t care less. Okes, I had a ruff time at the beginning & just ollying on to the pavement at the beginning was a bruising mission to say the least. Heck, we must have looked like a bunch of retarded clowns with beer boops cruising down the streets. But it was good fun.
A few weeks later my wife asked me if I had lost weight. I thought so as well, although I still made an effort to meet the pub gang regularly after work & had not cut down on my beers. Don’t get me wrong, I have 2-3 beers max with the boys at the pub Wednesdays & Fridays, but not more.
Then after a month I was lank surprised to see that I had lost 6kg’s from the skating. I was chuffed to say the least, especially as skating is something I have enjoyed my whole life.
I can only recommend this to any of you okes who want to lose a few pounds & had a knack for skateboarding during your younger years. It is the most fun in weightloss I know.
Hier kom die Skater-Toppies!
