What About Us? - I ask

25 June 2014, 22:15
I was reading the story of Bonang Matheba and the SABC with keen interest. It was reported that the SABC fired Bonang after she went behind their back and signed a contract with their rival, DSTV.

What made me have much interest on the story was the fact that there was an individual who was caught between two opportunities presented by competitors.

In this world of little opportunities, it is an open secret that our country has a very high rate of unemployment. A few decades ago, unemployment was blamed on the lack of skills and tertiary qualifications. Today there are many qualified people who do not have jobs.

The unemployment rate gets higher every day and big corporates do not seem to be playing their part to put an end to this unfortunate situation.

I understand that some individuals, just like Bonang, are multi-talented and intelligent, but I feel they are greedy. Many celebrities have three or four jobs with different employers and I think they are unconsciously contributing to the high rate of unemployment.

In most cases you find that they are not even competent enough to carry out their tasks, but they get the roles simply because they are already-established brands.

In a country where poverty and unemployment is rife, employers should at least give attention to people who are still trying to find their feet.

How do we expect the unemployment rate to drop if jobs are given to the same people while more deserving people are ignored?

The battle against poverty and unemployment can only be realised if we become less selfish. Let us share what we have so that not only a minority sits with the riches while the majority of people are poor.
