We have to understand what tongues are in Scripture...Is it really the tongues we hear of or is it something else? Well, like the way we do it, let the bible speaks for itself.
"And there appeared unto them [disciples] cloven tongues like of fire
, and it sat upon each of them."- Acts 2:1, this happened on the day of Pentecost, but what were this cloven tongues like fire that set upon the Disciples? "And they were filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with OTHER TONGUES, AS THE SPIRIT
gave them."- Verse 4,
(a) The Disciples were given the ability to speak in tongues ...
(b) From the verse, we clearly see that speaking in tongues is a gift of the Holy Spirit, like Paul who caught this fact saying, "Now there are diversities[different] gifts, but the same Spirit...for one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom...to another the gift of divers kinds of tongues"- 1 Corinthians 12:4,8,10. Here we even learn that there are different kinds of tongues, it is one of the gift to the Holy Spirit, not all are/were to have it.
So why the disciples at Pentecost given this gift? Well remember at chapter 2 we are presented with a scene were the disciples were to preach Jesus to the nations that were present. Christ before living to Heaven promised them of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit which were to result in giving them the gift of other tongues saying "For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence"- Acts 1: 5.
So they spoke that day in tongues to the nations which were gathered to them, notice what verse 11 of Acts 2 say; "...we do hear them speaking in OUR TONGUES
the wonderful works of God..." As the disciples spoke to the people in "other tongues", and the people saying they heard them in their "Our tongues", it must mean that the disciples were enabled by the Holy Ghost to speak in the tongues of the people right?
But what were this tongues?...Well we go back to verse 6 when it says "...the multitude came together, and where confounded, because that every man heard them[the disciples] speak IN HIS OWN LANGUAGE." that is why verse 11 the people said "...we do hear them speak in OUR TONGUES"...According to the Bible tongues are actually languages. The Holy Spirit gave them this gift of having the ability to speak in multiple languages without having to learn them, they were enabled to speak perfectly in other languages, but why? that they can preach the Gospel truth. It is no wonder Paul said to the Church of Corinth that "tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not."- 1 Corinthians 14:24, so tongues, which are languages, are given for ministering to the unbelievers, and Paul himself had this gift, having the ability to speak in many languages without even having to learn them.
It is no wonder in Acts 21:40 it said "..and Paul Stood on the stairs...he spake unto them in the HEBREW TONGUE
" you see, in other words it says "he spoke to them in the Hebrew Language", same with chapter 22 v 2 when it says; "and when they heard that he[Paul] spake in the Hebrew tongue to them
, they kept the more silence" In 1 Corinthians 14 Paul speaks of this gift to the people of Corinth. You see when studying that Chapter you have to always keep in mind the frame of reference of Paul, he was writing this letter to the church at Corinth. In the chapter he would speak of "unknown tongue
", what Paul is saying is that he cannot speak an unknown tongue to the people there, meaning that for Paul to speak another language they know not to the people of Corinth, they will not hear because the tongue, language, is "unknown" to them, it is a strange language to them because they can't hear what he says unless there was an interpreter. That is the idea behind that chapter. For example, I cannot come pray a prayer in Chinese with you when you don't know it, you won't know what am saying , so this will cause all the confusion. So the babblings which we hear cannot be what the Bible is referring to.
"And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon."- Rev. 16:16
