What is wrong with our football??

25 June 2014, 12:44

What’s wrong with our football???

The 2014 FIFA World Cup is underway in Brazil and the world’s finest players are doing what they do best. Football lovers across the world are feasting on some great goals and skills, while it is great to see all this the absence of Bafana Bafana cannot be ignored.

A lot has been said about why we didn’t qualify, SAFA has even gone as far as to announce that Gordon Igesund’s contract will not be renewed. Is Gordon to blame for not qualifying? Is Pitso Mosimane the guy to blame? Should we blame SAFA?

I for one have no interest whatsoever as to who to blame, all I want to see is the national team doing well just like they were doing in 1996. Is changing coaches going to help? Do we have the talent to conquer African football just like we did in 1996?  Who has the answers? Most experts have emphasized the importance of building proper youth structures and SAFA has for many years spoken about youth development and yet nothing of note has happened.

Neymar Jnr. is 22 years old has 52 caps and 35 goals, Bongani Zungu is 21 years old has 6 caps and 1 goal. Neymar started playing for the Brazilian national team at the age of 18!!! Where are our 18 year olds? Are they still in youth teams or in 1st teams?

Every now and then you will hear commentators and some football fans call Mandla Masango (24), George Lebese (25) & Thulani Serero (24) youngsters…If you combine their caps & goals they don’t even come close to Neymar’s. Why are our coaches not introducing young players into the national team at a young age? Are our 18 year olds good enough to play for the national team? If not, who is to blame?

I believe we have the talent…Can you imagine what the likes of Jabu Pule, Mbulelo Mabizela etc. would have achieved by now had they been disciplined and committed? What is wrong with our football?

Can SAFA fix our football? Do we need a football indaba? What needs to be done to fix our football? All I have is questions…I wish I had the answers but I don’t.

The empty seats at our PSL games indicate that there is something wrong in our games, maybe you can tell me, why don’t you attend PSL games?

Someone somewhere must have the answers
