What on earth made Reeva run from the bedroom into the bathroom on that fateful night? Reeva and Oscar were two young people who should have been enjoying that eve of Valentine’s Day together, as lovers do all over the world.
What do we know about these two people on that night? We know that one of them was eager to express their romantic feelings for the other and beginning the countdown hours to Valentine’s Day by cooking supper for her love interest and her gift to him was wrapped and waiting to be presented - most probably with a kiss. Was she anticipating an expression of romance from him? A gift? Loving words? Even a declaration of love?
Oscar had no romantic Valentine’s gift for Reeva that night.
That night, their first Valentine’s Day together, instead of becoming a romantic memory ended with her death by the hands of Oscar.
We know from his own testimony that the evening was as far removed as can possibly be, from the traditional idea of an intimate and cosy evening shared by two young people in love. By his own words, they spent the evening in the same room yet each separately occupied throughout their few awake hours together. By his own words, he was asleep by 9pm. In just a mere three hours from the time he came home, they had eaten supper, he had showered or bathed, he had spent time on lengthy phone calls and on his Ipad. She had cooked, brought him something to drink in his bedroom, done yoga on the bedroom floor, sat on the bed and engaged him in conversation about cars on the internet. Not the stuff of romance novels. He fell asleep while she was still on her Ipad at 9pm. At approximately 3am he awakened he says, and she was awake, concerned that he was having difficulty sleeping.. “Can’t you sleep Baba” she said.
But what really happened?
Could it be that neither had been able to get to sleep? Could it be that instead of the drearily mundane evening he described, they had argued incessantly?
Could it be that their argument escalated in the early hours of Valentine’s day, to the point that Reeva packed her overnight bag and threatened to leave or intended to leave? Could it be that Oscar became enraged at Reeva for a reason we may never know? Could it be that an enraged Oscar threatened her with the cricket bat and she ran screaming into the bathroom to escape being hit by him? We know she fled to that bathroom with her cell phone, perhaps to call someone for help? She never did get the chance to make a call.
Imagine this scenario: Screams and shouts from both of them. Oscar runs after her into that bathroom with the cricket bat but she is quicker than him and manages to reach the safety of that toilet before he can catch up with her. She slams and locks that toilet door, [remember he said he heard the toilet door slam] all the while screaming in terror at the image of the wild-eyed madman running behind her on his stumps with that cricket bat which he fully intended to use on her. Perhaps on route during that run he used that cricket bat as a balance aid? Who knows? But she was behind that toilet door and he could not vent his anger on her as intended with that bat. Thwarted, furious and frustrated, he bashes that bath trap-door with the bat. Remember the unexplained bashed in metal bath-trap door? He flings the bat down onto the bathroom floor and rushes back to his bedroom, fury giving him speed and momentum normally not evident without his prosthetics. He would NOT be outdone by Reeva. He would not be outdone by anyone who dared to defy him or thwart his aim. He has a gun. Nothing will prevent him from getting to her and venting his fury on her. And his gun has special zombie-stopper bullets which can blow a watermelon to smithereens! What defence is a flimsy toilet door? Hah!
He grabs his gun, yes, all the while keeping his eyes on that bathroom passage, [just as he testified] to make sure that Reeva does not hastily escape the bathroom if his attention is diverted. He rushes back into that bathroom, he knows she is behind that door because she is screaming and pleading. Or even perhaps still arguing with him! He aims his gun and fires. Again and again and again. Die! You will never assert yourself in defiance of me again! For that you will Die! The reverberating sounds of those loud gunshots and her animal sound of pain as the first bullet makes it's mark in her body, elevates his heart-rate with the unbridled excitement of his own power! His ego unleashed to it’s maximum is heady and beyond his control! In that moment, he is at his mightiest, an All Powerful god to himself and Reeva is his ultimate sacrifice to his narcissism. He picks up that cricket bat from the floor and bashes down the toilet door to check his handiwork and make sure that Reeva will not be able to tell the world what happened that night.
Right then, who knows what thoughts went through his mind? Perhaps as he carried the dying Reeva downstairs towards his garage door in the front foyer of his home, he even considered the option of his car and a permanently disappeared Reeva? Did he calculate if he had enough time to get rid of the gun and claim intruders shot her?
Slowly as his excitement abates, his fury spent, his self-preservation and cunning surfaces to help him re-work the mental image storyboard which is playing like a movie in his head, overlaid onto the events that had just unfolded and an intruder story takes shape. And woven into that tale is even the opportunity to come out looking like a victim hero himself if he plays it right! He can put himself between Reeva and the intruding killer/s in the bathroom! Yeah! That will work!
He reaches for the phone…..
