What's wrong with people?

WHAT’S WRONG WITH PEOPLE?

“Kenyan eats housemate’s heart” we read in today’s news headlines.

Most people reading this latest example of what some men consider do-able, would be reeling in shock and horror, convinced the person is either mentally ill or possessed by the devil.  Others would be pondering the perpetrator’s sanity, upbringing, emotional state, ethnicity, culture and lack of morals or lack of Christianity in order to find the root cause of such behaviour.  There will be other people who would ascribe this deviance to the devil’s influence, ethnicity or low intelligence level.  Even opportunity or circumstance might be considered as a reason.  Then there are people who would, for lack of words simply call him an animal.   One could even be forgiven for thinking that perhaps he just didn’t like his housemate very much – or – liked him more than he should have!

All this conjecture in an effort firstly to label and understand what drives a person to commit such a heinous act and secondly to put as much distance between this type of deed and the reader who considers himself ‘different’ from this killer.

But this headline is just another report of gruesome murders reported every day from all around the world along with other categories of ‘crime’ which have been happening throughout history.    We hear of murders, paedophilia, theft, cruelty, white collar crimes et al, alongside of instances of bravery, genius, adventurers, and acts of kindness, great love and great hatred too.

Ever stopped to really think about what could make you cut out a mate’s heart and eat it?  I mean not in an abstract sort of way, but really put yourself in that perpetrator’s situation, in his mind, feel his emotion [or lack of emotion!], visualise the action along with all the gory, bloody details, sensation, vision, taste and smell.       Repulsed?    Perhaps you are not capable of killing.

So what makes you different from him?

Your morals you say?  Your religious beliefs?    Your intelligence?   Your good upbringing?  Your love and empathy?  Your education?   Your social status?  Your goodness or love of humanity?

We know that a fear of punishment or the love of a god does nothing to stop people committing crime and we know that crime of every description is committed by people across the entire spectrum of society, culture and education levels.    So what’s the answer?

Could it be that you and he are actually different species of humanity?

A mutated gene here and there or a gene dropped or added, and voila! - a real difference in outcome.   Downs Syndrome is one such example.

The more I see of man the more I am convinced we are a conglomeration of species of mankind all lumped together by social, racial and geographic dictates and incorrectly schooled to categorise people accordingly.

I do believe that in time it will be discovered that mankind is made up of species of humans just as there are species of all animals, insects, birds, fish and trees.

Once those species are recognized and revealed, we will understand why people are brain-wired to be leaders or followers, brave or meek, killers, autistic, genius, explorers, teachers, philosophers, daredevils, and artists, poets, gay or straight, to name a few known variations.

Metal illness diagnosis will become a thing of the past as a means of categorising ‘differences’.    Instead, we will know and understand our place in the world, just as the zebra knows to avoid the eye of the killer cats and the rabbit knows the danger of the shadow of the eagle overhead.

Just as the lion is not diagnosed as mentally ill, so too we will know that those who cannibalize other humans, do so when they can because they just do.
