It is not my place to judge what happened on that fateful night that Reeva Steenkamp was killed. For that we have police and courts of law. What does bother me is this outpour of friends and family that Oscar Pistorious was just another sweet and simple guy.
Now that all the cracks are coming to the surface, it would appear to me that we are talking about "a troubled person" rather than a than Mr. Nice.
A reporter from New York who visited Pistorious at his home and went to a shooting range with him, poignantly described Pistorious as "Just a little more than crazy"That people who met Pistorious fleetingly, found him "sweet and charming",I can understand.
Who is not bright eyed and bushy tailed, a real sunny boy, in front of an adoring public, especially when everything is going his way?The cracks and news stories tell of a gun fan, a man obsessed with fast cars, fast boats, not averse to a punch-up, a macho and ugly with alcohol. Mr. Pistorious was also not an unknown figure to the police, a serious speedboat accident and a 17 hour stint in the chookie for alleged violence against a girlfriend.
Is this a normal man? I do not think so. So why this myopia and blotting away of all the shadowy sides of OP?I suspect that a lot has to do with megabucks. As soon as somebody is a big earner, we S.Africans loose our critical faculties. If they earn so much well........they must be....a god!
SA is very short of heroes. We like it glamorous and glittery, now that is the real world. It is time that we get our critical faculties together and see that hardship, e.g. O.J. Simpson (racial hardships/hang-ups), Lance Armstrong (a tough youth and cancer), O.P. ( a birth defect), does not necessarily translate into a higher moral ground. Sadly, sometimes translating in the opposite direction.
