Where have the Intellectuals gone?

06 June 2012, 14:04

When I was asleep, I am convinced that Scotty beamed up the clever people, removing all traces from the earth. Or was it a mass lobotomy done by even higher-intelligence alien types? Why are the blondes even on a par with the brunettes lately? For this article I have placed myself on a high horse. The reason for this is not that I am any better than anybody else, but that I am aware of some of the problems we face.

While I may not be the most popular of News24’s contributors, I like to think that there are at least a few hundred people that can appreciate a different kind of story. Has there not been enough argument over the question of evolution versus creation? And why are people so besotted with the details that are forced upon us as fact, when there is absolutely no infallible proof of the theories.

But sure, you have an opinion, so shout it! Write some controversial piece of nonsense that you regurgitate from the Bible or the Darwin philosophies. We have heard it all before, but it is interesting that thousands of brain-dead people will pose the same arguments for each article. And if evolution is the answer, by the way, what does it matter? If creation is the answer, who cares? No really… Christians will care? I don’t see why they should be worried… after all it’s all about FAITH, is it not? So if the Christians get upset about what the evolutionists think then are they not actually expressing doubt in their own faith?

Let us get into this little issue before I get blamed for being anti-this or anti-that (which is guaranteed anyway)… God is the good Guy… he wants his followers to be like Him. He tells His people to abide by the laws of the country, to be unselfish and humble. However, I am constantly amazed that people are so conscious of the laws that they park on yellow lines down the entire street in front of the church. They are so unselfish that they will park in front of local residents’ driveways just so that they can get a front-row seat. Oh, but wait… the front rows are reserved for pastors these days! I guess those humility laws fell away years ago?

Then we have the latest fashion… Atheism. If you don’t believe in God, either change your mind or shut up about it please. Atheism has turned into a vibrantly supported religion on its own. The whole idea of this “new” religion is to annoy those that do have a belief. Intelligence is not about how you prove others wrong, but has rather a lot to do with being able to tolerate other points of view. (The jury is still out on the question of whether there can be any intelligence in following a religion that is anti-religion anyway.)

On the point of tolerance: It is very interesting to see how some writers get so taken with their own opinions that they pour out their lack of tolerance for others’ opinions in long-winded passionate comments, tarnishing the very ideals that they are trying to promote in their own articles: very clever indeed.

This morning on the radio, I heard a lady call in, criticizing Gareth Cliff about the way the judges ridicule the Idols entrants. Immediately I realized that this would be entertaining: the poor woman didn’t have a chance, although she thought she did. Obviously she had recently been lobotomized because to try and fight an experienced, opinionated radio DJ who has full control of your audio, and who has a million fans listening, and who just loves such conflict, on air; it’s like the mouse standing up to the eagle, middle-finger raised. Should we admire such (erm..) boldness? (Or should we call a spade a spade?)

And then, dear reader, there is you. You have the opportunity to challenge what I have said here: comments are welcome. I have already defined a troll in a previous article, and I am certain there will be one. There is likely to also be one who claims I am a heathen, one that claims I am anti-Christian, and possibly even someone that tries to convince us that the world and everything in it exists due to a chance explosion: like a tiny bit of dust in a large empty room that in an instant became populated with desks and chairs, and even specific books for specific subjects. Okay, that’s feasible.

I shall refrain from criticizing our poor voters this time; after all, they have been suffering way too long to be worried that they may not see prosperity before death. The fact that our leaders can steal from their public for so long is completely acceptable under the circumstances.

But can we really overlook our education system? For years we have been told about this wonderful progressive teaching technology called “OBE”. It took around ten years for the implementation and for the teachers to be instructed on how it should work… now it has apparently been shelved? Personally I am more than happy that my child will not be subjected to the local flavor of OBE, but will the young teachers now be able to move back to the “new” (or is it old) curriculum without delay? Already, our schools’ marks are relative. It is also already possible to obtain a Matric with only a third of the exam paper ever being completed. At least our current president had to pass his schooling with more than thirty percent! (Wait, how far did he get again?)

And whilst on the subject of intelligence: Now that Facebook is a listed company, your right to privacy will be infringed upon seriously by others being able to re-post what you have written on a public page. Save your friends and loved ones from this peril: warn all of your friends by sharing this article with them.

Are we all destined to become zombies?
