Where were you?

15 October 2012, 09:42
WHERE WERE YOU

Where were you on the 20th  July 1969?  That was the day the Yanks landed on the moon.

On the previous day us appies (apprentices) were busy digging a trench to lay a mock HT cable in. The going was tough because the ground was hard due to lack of moisture, energy and sweat. It was difficult to even dig with shovels and picks due to the tough micaceous ground. And as usual swearing was one way to expedite the job and it actually worked. The apprentice instructor was also hanging around giving least wanted orders. At the end of the days work we hung around waiting to tjaila. As all over the world the talk centred around the moon landing. The instructor decided to make a wager with us appies. If the moon landing goes off perfectly without any hitches we must buy him a bottle of brandy.  And if there is some or other hitch to abort the programme then he will buy us a bottle of brandy.

Next day we were back on the job battling to complete the hand excavation, the job took more time and eventually the trench was completed.

A second cable had to be installed and it went with out a hitch until we had to draw it into a live distribution box. We used an uninsulated length of wire attached to the cable. In the process the wire touched two busbars with a bang making the Big Bang look like a fizzle. 10 apprentices skedaddled in 10 different directions.  Power was out in the area and the foreman’s office.

The instructor came to the scene some minutes later with a cherubic smile on his dial.  The moon landing went off without a hitch. Now the 20th of any month is not financially good for apprentices because by then they are broke and pay day is usually on the 22nd of the month. We decided to club in and buy the damn brandy. Due to financial constraints we ended up buying a  half-jack of Mellow Wood and made the day for the instructor.  04/10/2012
