I just read this post: http://www.news24.com/MyNews24/Black-Apartheid-Legacy-The-untold-stories-of-the-Rainbow-Nation-20130818.
It seems that the writer, like many other black South Africans, feels that they are a victim of a system that they were not alive to see.
While I can see that there is certainly a residual impact of apartheid (compounded exponentially by ANC mismanagement and corruption), I would like to point out that as far as victims of apartheid go, black South Africans of my generation are no more a victim than I am.
Aviwe, the poster, makes a good case for the trials faced by black South Africans during and after apartheid.
What about white South Africans?
Do you, Aviwe, regularly get told that you are not African, even though geography and fact state otherwise?
Are you hated, blamed and threatened because of a system you had no part in?
White South Africans my age are.
Are you told to go back to North Africa, where your forefathers came from?
White South Africans are told to go back to Europe - even by government officials. Even though many who would like to leave cannot, because they have only ever held South African passports.
Are you restricted from studying at universities today? Or jobs? Or sports?
White South Africans are, thanks to quotas, AA and BEE.
Are you a victim of the past? Absolutely.
Am I? Absolutely.
Except that the racist persecution of your race stopped in 1991, and the racist persecution of mine started.
We are both victims of apartheid, but there won't be any reparations for me. I will continue to suffer the stigma for being white for the rest of my life. I will be judged for crimes I did not commit, and punished for the actions of a political system I had no part in.
Unless you've been convicted of a crime you are innocent of, you can never have any idea how that feels.
I will continue to be called unafrican, even though I have no other country to call home.
I feel genuinely sorry for black South Africans who suffered due to apartheid. But who will feel sorry for people like me?
