I am by no means a Julius Malema fan and I find it hard to believe in the sincerity of a man who lives in a who know how many million rand house.
However, he has a point… I am yet to come across a white domestic worker. I may as well admit that I am white and I employ a black domestic worker.
I would like to believe that I treat her really well – with great respect. She has a department of labour approved contract which includes paid vacation, sick leave and UIF. I am also not above cleaning house and yes this includes scrubbing toilets and getting down on my hands and knees to clean our floors. I discover my own ability to do such things every December when she goes on four weeks annual leave.
I would, however, not want to ever be a domestic worker. Let’s be real honest here, it’s a horrible job. Yet as democratic and reformed as South Africa has supposedly become, it is still black people that clean our houses.
It makes me think….apartheid has many disguises and we as a white society still have a far way to go .....
