White males are sad

15 July 2014, 19:45
Unfortunately it is a sad reality that being white in South Africa, particularly male comes with some problems, due to the Nature of the construct of white male ideology in terms of their masculinity and what gives it its identity (of which I intend not to, at this stage, dwell on). As well as due to the past racially discriminatory laws, policies, practises and the current prevailing realities in terms of the socio-political relations between black and white.

More specifically, The failure by white people (who are by far powerful, economically) here in South Africa during the days of apartheid and over the last two decades of democratic governance, to do internal introspection so as to enable themselves to identify that the current patterns of both societal and economic relations in this country is unrepresentative of the south African reality, undemocratic and if it is to continue in the current trajectory, Unsustainable, and will be of neither benefit to them Nor  the black majority.

I am in no way advocating that (1. In order to try and bring about good societal relation between blacks and whites, whites should despise, deny and go to the extent of trying to eliminate their whiteness by psychologically and at times patronizingly trying to integrate themselves in the experience of the black majority, because even that would not eliminate or redistribute the white privileges that have been unjustly accumulated over centuries of black oppression, more so in the decades of apartheid institutional racism and economic deprivation.

However strange it may sound, as it does not fit in to conventional wisdom. But I am however advocating for certain kind of consciousness among white people in this country (white consciousness), the kind that will enable them NOT to view themselves as being the superior race and as such see themselves as entitled to all the goodies that life offers by virtue of their being, as it has been the case for time immemorial, what is needed is the kind of white consciousness that will enable white people to finally be aware of themselves as the historically privileged people, recognising Black people as being the historically deprived people and as such recognising the need for urgent need social justice which will forthwith create a conducive ground for the establishment of proper societal relation (social cohesion).

As white people, to be conscious as mentioned above would not necessarily mean that they will be giving up their integrity or anything of that sort, but it will be a direction towards gaining and regaining the very important sense of humanity, which is currently engulfed by the white need to maintain the status quo. It is a fact that whit people in this country are hesitant if not extremely opposed to facing up to the overtones of their whiteness

If this country is to be an example that as South Africans, on a daily basis strive to be in the international sphere. I believe white people should get out of their comfort zone and recognize the ill of the past, take ownership of those ills as they in the current era still enjoy and take ownership of the privileges which are as a result of those ill of the past in order to pave way for a creation of new societal equality and thus a new societal reality.
