The story about the Australian DJs, Kate’s morning sickness and the suicide nurse just won’t go away. It deeply upsets me. Desperate for answers, I turned to my CD collection. My eye fell on an old Dylan album. He wrote a song in 1964 about a boxer killed in the ring. It is called: “Who killed Davey Moore?”.
In typical Dylan fashion, the song is not only timeless, it can, with slight adjustment apply as if it was written today. Perhaps something like this:
Who Killed Nurse Saldanha,
Why and what’s the reason for?
"Not I," says the DJ,
"Don't point your finger at me.
I could've stopped the call at any time
An' maybe kept her from her fate,
But the listeners would've booed, I'm sure,
At not gettin' their money's worth.
It's too bad she had to go,
But there was a pressure on me too, you know.
It wasn't me that made her fall.
No, you can't blame me at all."
Who killed nurse Saldanha,
Why an' what's the reason for?
"Not us," says the angry listeners,
Whose screams filled the airwaves loud.
"It's too bad she died that night
But we just like to have a laugh.
We didn't mean for her t' meet her death,
We just meant to see some sweat,
There ain't nothing wrong in that.
It wasn't us that made her fall.
No, you can't blame us at all."
Who killed nurse Saldanha,
Why an' what's the reason for?
"Not me," says the radio station manager,
Puffing on a big cigar.
"It's hard to say, it's hard to tell,
I always thought that she was well.
It's too bad for her husband an' kids she's dead,
But if she was sick, she should've said.
It wasn't me that made her fall.
No, you can't blame me at all."
Who killed nurse Saldanha,
Why an' what's the reason for?
"Not me," says the hospital boss,
With her time sheet still in his hand.
"It wasn't me that knocked her down,
My hands never touched her none.
I didn't commit no ugly sin,
Anyway, I put money in her bonus tin.
It wasn't me that made her fall.
No, you can't blame me at all."
Who killed nurse Saldanha,
Why an' what's the reason for?
"Not me," says the newspaper writer,
Pounding print on his old typewriter,
Sayin', "humour ain't to blame,
There's just as much danger in a football game."
Sayin', "Prank calling is here to stay,
It's just the old Australian way.
It wasn't me that made her fall.
No, you can't blame me at all."
Who killed nurse Saldanha,
Why an' what's the reason for?
“Not me," says princess Kate
who was in hospital even though she needn’t be,
Who came there with morning sickness
when the clerks and the typists go to work.
"I’m just a privileged royal,
Please send my husband back to me.
Don't say I should’ve stayed home
The queen already chewed me out"
Who killed nurse Saldanha,
Why an' what's the reason for?
"Not me," says the man in the street
now baying for the DJ’s blood,
Who came here with accusation
Laying the blame at the door of the radio station.
"I hate the DJ, I hate him, yes, it's true,
Don’t care if that's what he’s paid to do.
Don't say 'murder,' don't say 'kill.'
It was destiny, it was God's will."
Who killed nurse Saldanha,
Why an' what's the reason for?
