Like many tourists, we were at the receiving end of some low-life scamster, who tried to swop Zim dollars for Rands, at a crazy rate. I caught him out, and wanted to get down and dirty, but my friends interferred for long enough to let him get away, running like a windhond.
I shouted after him, calling him what he was, and to my great surprise, some guys took off after him. Not thinking anything of it, we made our way to our car, when another onlooker asked us to wait, because "they" will catch him. A few minutes later, they returned with the skelm, torn shirt and all. "They" asked us what we wanted to do with him, at which time the police also arrived and asked us to give a statement. They cuffed the skelm, and took him off to the station.
By comparison, I wonder what the reaction of the public would be if it happened in SA. I doubt that there would be any reaction, I have never heard of the public getting involved when a cellphone or a handbag is snatched. Shame on us.
Viva Zimbabwe, you guys rock!
