My name is Zanele Ndlovu. I am a twenty-four years old fashion designer born in Bushbuckridge Mpumalanga. I started designing both couture and chic at a very young age, learning the ropes from my mother who is the source of my inspiration. She is also the designer who continually encourages me to improve on my designing. My first entry into the world of fashion was through making doll clothes and selling them to my peers.
As I grew up the selling point for my reason to aspire to grow further was my ever improving fashion designing skills. I found inspiration from simple things to do what I love the most. My passion is inspired by seeing the end product of what I envisaged, which is what keeps me going. Being a creator is the most fulfilling occupation I could indulge in, since for that moment I am a god – a creator and can marvel at the beauty of my work.
My style is largely influenced by the fashion I see every day, which mostly influences me to recreate and redefine existing fashion to my own understanding. My fashion definition is creating beauty in what I do and making the consumers of my creations feel and find their own identity in them.
My style can be defined in many terms even though I don’t want to put it in a box. It has been defined as traditional African, Afro- chic, Afro-centric. my inspiration towards such creations is to maintain my identity and define my style, yet again I am able to expand my abilities to suit different occasions and different styles.
What keeps me going in designing is hope and belief in what I do. My ambition is to grow and learn more in and about fashion to not compete with the existing big names in the fashion world internationally but be a part of what they do.
I want to be part of the growth of the fashion industry in South Africa, seeing that at the moment fashion designing is not as big here as other international markets. We have not yet reached a stage whereby we can boast season collections staged in the big cities, either simultaneously or successively. For us to reach that stage whereby we can have a Summer, Winter, Spring and Autumn Collections staged in both Cape Town, Johannesburg, Durban, Bloemfontein and Nelspruit talent should be identified even in our rural areas, not only in Gauteng. This can help in the growth of our fashion industry with more players participating in growing this industry.
Considering the fact that not all have the opportunity to further their studies natural ability and creativity should be promoted. I believe our country can grow in terms of fashion, given the chance & opportunity to expand our horizons.
My fashion label and designer name is DARK ANGEL. Given a chance on the ramp to showcase my designs and creativity I believe that my label will grow to be amongst the best, not only in South Africa but internationally as well.
