I cannot but wonder why the courts and parliament with the inauguration of the new cabinet, still bothers with the oath.
No god is recognized by our modern constitution (and we are constantly reminded it is the best in the world) so why should we solemnly swear that we are about to stop lying and start telling the truth?
I have not heard of a perjury case in years and should anyone wish to pursue such case, start at the CCMA. It is well known to employers that the ‘better’ version wins, weather its true or not is quite academic. In fact the whole concept of truth in South Africa is a shady affair.
Some gods are more forgiving with lies than others, so on which one do I now risk my soul ? Surely not the one promising me an eternal hellish fire and brimstone?
Frankly I find the whole swearing ‘so help me god’ exercise quite offensive.
May I suggest that we replace this outdated custom with a truth serum from a sangoma (al la queen Ranavalona I of Madagascar) or at the very least to swear that the President of the Constitutional Court can strike me down with a rusted sword should I not honour my oath?
Oaths are no longer believable, least by those take it.
