Why corporal punishment is unethical (from experience)

30 August 2012, 12:39
I know there is a debate in SA at the moment on corporal punishment and here is my 2 cents that I would like to share here on the topic.

During the 90's the boarding school I attended, regularly jacked me for inappropriate behaviour up until it was deemed unconstitutional and sometimes illegally after that (which in itself was pathetic as I got dismissed at the school for breaking the law despite the school setting an example on how to do this).

Getting back to my behaviour. In 2010 I was diagnosed with a brain tumour the size of an orange in the area of the brain that affects my perception, moods and logic.

The significance of the size is that it indicates that most likely I had this festering in my brain possibly since birth and highly likely before my teens. No matter how many times I received a hiding, I don't think I was ever going to be a good kid with any form of punishment.

No child deserves a hiding and here in Norway kids are not punished with a beating at home even and most turn out fine.
