Why do we hate so much?

06 June 2014, 12:32

I am a white male and yes like many others am angry, bitterly angry,  at how so many voted ANC in spite of their widely evident and publicised  incompetence, arrogance, greed, corruption, nepotism etc etc.  I too am tempted when reading online news articles that tell of suffering in townships (sanrail eviction, shacks burning down, flooded, etc ), to add my thumbs up to the “you voted for ANC so get what you voted for” comments.

I just can’t do that.

These are human beings and for the sake of humanity must be treated as such. It hurts when I read of their suffering and I wish I had a magic wand that would make their lives better. I’m not naive to believe poverty can be eradicated and that everyone in these shack towns will turn into model citizens. This should not stop us from trying to help or at the very least, show some sympathy. The sheer scale of the poverty and torrid living conditions in these townships is overwhelming.

It is shocking to read the vile hatred spewed out in the on-line forums. All races are guilty here. It seems asif these forums are convenient places for some people with their own issues, to project  their frustrations, insecurities and inadequacies onto anyone and anything they see as fair game.

I am alarmed at what I see as a rapid increase in “gloves off” racial attacks in these forums. There are good black people and bad ones, same for whites and any other race, affiliation or grouping. Do people realise the damage they cause by making blanket statements and labelling an entire race/political affiliation/group? Is everyone in the ANC bad? No I don’t believe so. Is every ANC supporter stupid? Absolutely not.

Despite all the mudslinging we do share a lot of common ground. There is a lot broken in our country right now but also don’t forget the many things that is working. We cannot just make it someone else’s problem to fix or point fingers. Trust is the big issue between races here and fortunately that is something that is in our sphere of control and ability to fix. Get that out of the way and the path will open up to deal with the rest. Question is however: “does everyone have the will…”
