When my wife died 7 years ago, although no longer a Christian, I still held a belief in an interventionist god. After her death, she was only 31, I was very angry with him. How could he allow people like Mugabe or Murdock or Bush to live such long lives and cut hers so short?
This did not seem very fair to me, but once I had time to reflect and really think about it, I came to the only logical solution. I can tell you a great weight was lifted off my shoulders when I understood that what happened, although awful, was a natural part of life. Some people live long lives and some live short lives. Their goodness or lack thereof has nothing to do with longevity whatsoever.
Again I am faced with this conundrum as my father, suffering from an illness, is bemoaning why god is punishing him. Similarly, a friend that has fallen on hard times has also said he wonders why god is doing this to him.
It saddens me to think that good people would try to find some non-existent “evil” within them to explain why god is hurting them. Instead of realising that they did nothing wrong, save perhaps a few bad dietary habits or financial investments, and that these things sometimes just happen.
We live in an uncertain world and we can only try to be the best we can. When bad times come accept them for what they are, and do what you can to remedy them. And when good things happen, take full responsibility for this too. You will live a happier life, I assure you.
