This is a question that lingers in some Christian’s tongue and often those that have not fully grasp the meaning and value of tithing.
Before I get ridiculed for claiming to have the answers to this question, there are various scriptures in the bible that supports tithing. My favourite scripture has to be; Malachi 3:10 (NIV) “Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.” In addition, the Internet has tons of interpretations and blogs about tithing. But on the other hand, tithing is not practiced by all church denomination – that’s just another topic all together.
Like any other offering tithing is preached as God’s offering or rather thee best offering for God. As intelligent Christians we know very well that the money is not going to God, that’s not hard to believe because even in the bible not even a cent or an animal was sent to Heaven. But that doesn’t take away the responsibility to tithe, and the true essence of offering is not determined by the quantity of the offering but by the quality of the heart. Hence in the Bible Jesus proclaimed the poor widow who offered too little as the one who had offered more than the rest because she gave out everything all she had to live on. That was not based on the amount of money she gave but on the amount of heart she offered (I can see non-Christians saying hell NO).
However, back to the initial question – why do we pay tithe? In the words of Pastor Vusimuzi Vanda, “we pay tithe because we’re responsible citizens.” Preaching at 30 years celebration of Grace Bible Church in Soweto, he asked a question why do we pay tax? The answer is because we’re responsible citizens and the same goes for paying tithe. That for me was a simple answer than the scriptures and far-fetched stories. I think if churches can move down to this simple level of explanation rather than the spiritual interpretations, more and more people would understand tithing. Similarly to how the government operates, they’re clear that they need tax to fix our roads, public hospital, police station…okay we all know that some of that money ends up in their pockets that’s not news to our ears. The same can be said about some pastors who hide their sticky fingers behind the pulpit. But what the REAL men of the cloth need to add about tithe; forget God in the picture because He is in the bigger picture already. They need to boldly say we need the money to spread the gospel, build the church, buy new chairs, buy food and clothes for the poor…
So why do I pay tithe? “Because I am a responsible Christian.”
