Will you join the heavenly ANC?

09 December 2013, 08:13

Nelson Mandela was and will remain the most influential person in human history. The notion that he was an ordinary person like any dick and harry out there is not true and also the contention that he was a mere creation of the ANC as if the organization was his puppet master cannot be accepted as factual. The truth is that Nelson Mandela possessed unique qualities which made him a potent asset to African National Congress and the rest ...of human history. The positions he held in the movement were due to direct results of his individual qualities.

Throughout his life story, one can see that Mandela made many decisions alone, the prominent of which is his speech at Rivonia trial. Obviously, ANC could not have provided that speech. Another is the formation of Umkhonto we sizwe. Mandela was literally alone on this mission and ANC refused to be associated with MK. It was only after strenuous cross examination at Rivonia trial that a parallel was drawn between ANC and MK.

I'm stating this facts not to discredit the ANC's claim of Madiba, but to highlight the point that being in the ANC does not automatically turns one into a Madiba. It takes certain qualities to be purposeful in the movement. The most basic of such qualities is service to the people and dedication to activities that redress the legacy of oppression and restore the dignity of all human beings. This means commitment to end indigence thereby providing access to basic services and unlock economic opportunities that'll enable our people to escape the clutches of poverty.

This is to say that ANC members and prospective members need to possess an extraordinary character, a character of selfless sacrifice with regard to service delivery before we can claim association with Nelson Mandela. Every member of ANC in any level of governance, and outside government need to be a catalyst for qualitative transformation of the society in which s/he lives and avoid all temptation for self enrichment, nepotism and any form of unethical behaviour which includes corruption. Anyone who is incapable of withstanding the urge for self-enrichment and entitlement cannot claim to be a comrade of Nelson Mandela even if s/he is a member of ANC.

This fact stands out in the statement of Nelson Mandela regarding his after life when he said that he would look for a branch of ANC in heaven and if there is none, he will establish one. Nelson Mandela said this statement deliberately. Despite many ANC leaders and members having left this world, Mandela thought of a probability of not finding a suitable ANC in heaven, but made it his personal assignment to ensure the existence of ANC in the after life

Indeed that statement leaves us, members and none members of ANC, with one important question: Will your activities be a pleasing contribution to Mandela’s ANC?
