Win a dream holiday - stop the barking dogs

01 June 2012, 13:05

My prediction: The people of this country shall never be reconciled. Prove me wrong, and I’ll give you an all-expenses paid holiday, of your own choice, anywhere in the world. *Terms and Conditions apply.

No, I’m not rich - just realistic. More than anything, the spear fiasco confirmed what every sensible South African has always known - that the myth of reconciliation in this country is just that - a myth. Not just between black and white, but between black and black (as the xenophobic murders proved) - and to a much lesser degree, between white and white - such as those whites who hate Steve Hofmeyr.

I’m so sick and tired of hearing of “those heady days” of 1994 when we had the first democratic elections - and the myths of how the 1995 world cup rugby, and the 2010 soccer world cup, united the nation.

Racism, hatred, mistrust, prejudice, and fear of one another is only skin deep in this country. This fact has advantaged the communist ANC-government. As long as they manage to play the racist card - friction and conflict shall reign supreme between the different race groups.

A black friend of mine (surprise, surprise!), who spent many years in exile during the struggle, once made a brilliant statement. He said that since his return to South Africa, he noticed that the dogs in the white suburbs barked at black people when they walked past their houses. And vice versa.

(No, dummy, vice versa doesn’t mean that black pedestrians barked at the dogs in the townships!) He meant that the black people’s dogs barked at the white people who walked past the black people’s homes in the townships.

(I don’t mean that white people actually barked at black people’s dogs in the townships, dummy. Jeez, you really should pay attention!)

OK. Final explanation: He meant that the dogs were barking at people who were of a different race to that of their owners. (Racist dogs. Get it?)

And then he said: “Peace and harmony shall come to this country the day the dogs stop barking completely.”

Wow! Like a prophet! (Relax you atheists, this is not about religion.) To me, it was one of the most profound statements that I have ever heard.

Be it Malema singing: “Kill the Boer,” or some white, so-called beauty queen using the “K” word, or our president who is insulted by the painting of his worn-out spear racism is alive and doing well in this country. Whether it is blacks protesting outside Eugene Terreblanche’s murder trial; or Tutu, who wants whites to pay wealth tax; or the Boeremag; or some black person on these pages, wanting payback for the last 400 years; or the ANC government blaming apartheid for their own incompetence – the dogs are barking louder than ever.

And you know what?

As long as whites have to suffer from the effects of BEE and Affirmative action – and this useless government keeps on discriminating against whites, I shall be standing right next to my barking dog – commanding him: “Vat hulle, Flaffie!”
