Wondering about out attitude about customs

09 July 2013, 13:33

Just having a peek at the world after avoiding anything too political, too bizarre and  too painful. I'm wondering ...

We allow our children die in the name of custom. It is bizarre.

The original idea behind the circumcision ritual and custom is wonderful. Our youth need instruction but most of all examples. Rites of passage should be encouraged. Bastardizing anything that was originally born out of wisdom and knowledge should be stopped; custom is not exempted from this.

It sounds as if this tradition has become a money making "custom". Why can the government control all other money making "professions" (they are not deadly or dangerous) with rules and regulations and copious amounts of licensing and training fees but not this dangerous one? Is it not in the interest of our country and our children to help and guide people and situations that have gone completely out of control and are taking advantage of the situation.

What do we need:  Two years training which includes:  what it means to respect and be respected and a lesson or two in proper health and hygiene procedures. Make sure the people offering the service are competent. Inspecting and seeing to it that rules and laws are being complied with, is the difficult part for the supervisory body to accomplish successfully. Including the guardians in a part of the ritual and holding them as responsible for the outcome as the service providers, should ensure a type of quality control.

Lets hang onto good customs and even develop them into the useful modern concepts and rituals that are beneficial and not just an old habit.

"What this world needs is a new kind of army - an army of the kind."
